“Yeah, it starts in a few hours.”
“You could have just called me. You didn’t need to wait.”
His mouth opens like he wants to say something, but instead he nods and steps around me.
“You two be good,” he says.
“And you have fun. Try not to miss me too much,” I tease.
He turns, walking backward, flipping his hat as he does so. “That’s been pretty hard to do these days, Greer.”
I have no words as he gets into his truck. I just bite my lip so he can’t see the huge smile that wants to take over my lips.
I like flirty Simon.
Even when I shouldn’t.
* * *
“He’s just so handsome. I almost made Duke’s father bring him today so I could go to the signing in Melody.”
I reread the first sentence on my screen for the twentieth time as I hear another mom talk about Simon. They haven’t outright said his name, but really, who else would they be talking about? Yes, I know a whole group of guys who write and could possibly be at this signing, but only one of them has a kid in this field right now.
“I know,” another mom says before she lets her voice drop again. It’s a little harder to hear, but I still make out her next words. “I miss when he would bring his son to camp. I was looking forward to getting to know him a bit more. As a single mom, it’s hard to meet genuine guys these days. I was hoping I could get some one-on-one with him.”
I laugh silently. I’d love to see any of them flirt with Simon. He may write romance novels, but I’m not so sure he’s big on dishing out the type of chitchat she’s clearly looking for. Then again, he did get a little flirty with me earlier, and he was good at it.
I cast my gaze at the gossiping moms. I don’t like the idea of him flirting with any of them.
I swipe out of the book I was failing to read on my phone and pull up my planner. It’s weird to look at it now that I’m not dating via apps. My personal schedule has a lot more free time. Hence why I was so open to watching Grey longer than normal today. In all honesty, I’m just a glorified driver of sorts. Grey doesn’t need me for much of anything else but that. The rest of what I do is just a bonus, even if it’s left me less time to find dates.
The coach blows his whistle, signaling the end of the day, and all the boys run off the field to get their things.
“I wasn’t so sure we would see you today, Greer,” one of the moms, who’d been talking about Simon, says as everyone stands to go meet their kids. “We assumed you’d be with Simon.”
I should really get to know their names.
I give them a polite smile, and I’m just about to tell them why we didn’t go when Grey pops up out of nowhere. “Dad wouldn’t get anything done if Greer was there.”
What does that mean?
Again, I’m about to inquire, but one of the moms beats me to it.
“Oh really? Why is that?”
I nod, cross my arms, and look at Grey. I, too, would like to know.
“Because they’re dating, and he loves spending time with her.”
My eyes nearly jump off my face as a collective gasp surrounds us.
“You’re dating Simon Stone?”
“Why didn’t you tell us?”
“That’s sudden—how well do you know him?”
“I had no idea!”
