“I’ll see you around,” I say quickly and follow Grey.

“You can bet on it,” Calvin says and waves.

I leave the gym with a giddiness I haven’t felt in a while. But the thought remains that dating one of Grey’s coaches might not be a good idea.

I mean, I’m not ruling it out. Not yet.

After all, maybe it’s as a simple as Calla said earlier. Mr. Right could be right in front of me, and I don’t even know it.

CHAPTER EIGHT

SIMON

I added more items to my to-do list than I crossed off. How is that possible?

Today was the first day for me to make progress without interruption, and all I did was add to the mess.

I skim my current work in progress. My current scene is boring. I’m bored. I need to think of something new. I don’t even want to write it, which means a reader won’t want to read it. It’s officially a did-not-finish chapter.

I sigh, leaning back in my chair and twisting my cap backward. I rub my eyes with my palms just as my phone rings.

I don’t normally keep the volume on, but for the last hour, I’ve been going back and forth with my agent on the ending of my previous book. Although I’m grateful for his help, I don’t like the direction he wants me to go.

And that’s exactly why I answered his call with my opinion.

“I don’t want him to die,” I say in a tone that leaves no room for further discussion.

I put my phone on speaker as I await his reply.

Yes, I want to write what the readers want, but what good is that book if I don’t like it more?

“Then you need a new ending. If he dies, this book will be talked about on every media outlet,” Doug says louder than I’d planned.

I turn the volume down a notch and shake my head as if he could see me.

“Yeah, they’ll all be talking about how they don’t want to read my books anymore if I plan to kill off a beloved character.”

“You need something to shock them.”

“Well, someone else has to die,” I say, just as I hear the front door squeak open or closed again. Whatever Greer and Grey are doing, they’ve been going in and out for the last hour. As soon as they came home this afternoon, I almost called it a day, but the whole point is for Greer to help me get caught up and get ahead. I have to make it work. The sooner I’m caught up, the sooner I can spend more time with Grey and prioritize better.

I should have figured this out sooner.

“Who else could you kill to give them the plot twist they need?”

“Does anyone have to die?”

“Yes.”

“Why not make the sister the murderer? She has access to the house and everything around them.”

“That makes no sense.”

“Hence the plot twist.”

“What’s her reasoning?”

“Love. Duh. She wants the husband for herself. Maybe she has a shrine.”
