Page 12 of More Than Write

As soon as she went outside with Grey, I cut my workout short so that I could get to writing and call it a day sooner.

It’s not lost on me the lack of clothing between her and me on the porch. Me shirtless and her with her skintight gym outfit.

It was yet another moment where I wasn’t sure how to feel around Greer. Am I annoyed that her body made me think things it shouldn’t or grateful because she’s a beautiful woman, and I couldn’t take my eyes off her? She wore those clothes like they were made for her.

I sigh and lace my hands behind my head.

I don’t think the words are going to happen if all I can think about is the fact that someone else is having fun with Grey.

I save my work, make a few notes for what I want to have in my next scenes, change into a clean shirt, and then head outside.

Grey and Greer are stretching in the grass when I step out.

“Done already?” I ask and glance at my watch. It’s only been an hour.

“Just taking a break to stretch,” Grey says, and Greer nods a smile. “Really, it’s for me. He was winning, and I had to stop that.”

Grey laughs. “We should do this on all the days I don’t have a camp going. You could come hang out with me while my dad works.”

Hell.

“Oh, I’m sure he doesn’t work that much.”

“He works a lot.” He looks at me. “But I know you’re just trying to give me a good life, Dad. I’m not sad.”

How did I get so lucky with this kid?

And even though I don’t say it, he’s right. I work a lot. A lot more than I used to.

“How about right now, I take over for Greer?”

“Seriously?” Grey’s face lights up, and he jumps to my feet. “Like for real? Not a ‘let’s play for five minutes and then head inside to clean or cook or do something in the house?’”

I hold back the cringe. He makes me sound like dad of the year, doesn’t he?

“Like for real.”

He runs to me and gives me a high five as Greer stands behind him.

“I’ll let you two get to it.”

“Thank you,” I say as she passes.

I don’t know if it’s because of how close she is, the way her eyes lock on mine, or because I’ve written more heroines with a secret than I can count in my books, but it’s clear as day that she’s hiding something.

I shouldn’t care what it is.

And I sure as hell shouldn’t ask her about it.

“Is everything okay?”

She laughs with a small head shake. “Everything is fine. I’ll see you two around, and if he ever needs someone to hang out with, my door is open.”

I watch her disappear inside, and although I don’t believe a word she says, I have a kid waiting for me, and that’s my focus right now.

Almost two hours later, we head inside. Dinner and cleaning, as my son called me out for earlier, are calling my name.

“Holy smokes!” Grey says, beating me to the back door. “Look at this place.”
