My body goes still over hers. Control slams back into place. Hard. Too late. Before I can decide what to do with it, she moves. Fast. She twists under me, using the shift in my weight against me, and suddenly I’m the one on my back, the mattress at my spine instead of under her. She straddles me. In control.

My hands go to her hips automatically. Not pushing. Not stopping. Just there. Anchoring.

“You don’t get to take that back,” she says.

My mouth opens.

She presses her hand over it. Soft. Warm. Her laugh is quiet this time, but it’s there. Not mocking. Not dismissing. Grounding. “You don’t get to do that,” she repeats.

I stare up at her. Every instinct in me wants to push this back into control. To redefine it. To contain it.

She doesn’t let me. Her hand slides from my mouth into my hair, fingers threading through it, holding me there. “Everything’s been fast,” she says.

I tense. Wait for it. Wait for the shift. The pullback. The correction.

“Too fast,” she adds. There it is.

I brace for rejection.

She sees it. I know she does. “Not in a bad way,” she says quickly. “Just… intense.” Her thumb brushes my temple. Slow. Grounding. “Like we didn’t get to choose it,” she continues. “Like it happened because it had to.”

That lands. Because it’s true. Because none of this was planned. None of it was careful. It was necessity. It was survival. It was instinct.

Her hand presses against my chest. Right over my heart. “But that’s not all it is.”

I don’t move. Don’t speak. I just watch her. Wait.

“From the first time I looked at you…” she says, voice softer now, steady in a way that doesn’t match the chaos we came out of, “…something shifted.” My grip on her hips tightens. Not enough to hurt. Enough that she feels it. “…like my body knew you before my brain did.”

That hits deeper than anything else. Because it matches something I haven’t said out loud. Something I can’t explain.

“My heart hasn’t felt the same since,” she admits. Her palm presses more firmly against my chest. Right where she can feel it.Right where I know she can feel the way it’s changed.

“I think a part of me has always loved you,” she says quietly. “Even before I knew what that meant. Before I knew you.”

Silence fills the space between us. Not empty. Full. Heavy with everything neither of us is trying to hide anymore.

I don’t speak. I don’t know how to answer that in a way that doesn’t break something. Control doesn’t disappear. It shifts. Changes shape. Becomes something else.

She chose this. She chose me.

That matters more than anything. More than the timing. More than the chaos. More than the way everything started.

My hand slides up her back. Slow. Intentional. I pull her down to me. Not hard. Not consuming. Different. Her body settles against mine, the heat of her pressing into me, the rhythm of her breathing starting to match mine.

I press my mouth to hers again. Slower this time. Deliberate. Not taking. Claiming. Not just her body. Her choice. Her presence. Her place here. With me. My hand tightens slightly at her back. Holding her there. Keeping her there.

She’s not temporary.

She’s not something I protect until the threat passes.

She’s not a situation.

She’s permanent.

And anyone who comes for her… dies.

No hesitation. No question. No second chances. Love doesn’t soften anything in me. It sharpens it. Turns everything cleaner. More focused. More lethal. Because now there’s something to lose.
