“Check your emails, Mr. Brown. You now have eight minutes.” With that, I walk back to the table. Alfie watches me the entire way.

“That doesn’t look like it went well.” He smirks.

“Oh, it went exactly how I wanted it to go.” I sit down, and right as I do, my phone dings with an incoming email. A huge smile spreads across my face.

“Oh, I know that look,” Jacob says from across the table. “It’s the look she gets when she’s won something.”

“What just happened?” Alfie asks me.

“I just secured my first property on the Las Vegas Strip.” I expect him to get angry, to yell, to cause a scene and throw me out. Alfie doesn’t do any of that. No, he leans in, presses his lips to mine, and then smiles at me.

“Congratulations. I don’t know what you just did, but I’m impressed.”

“Oh, I just told him how I found out about his son’s embezzlement scheme and said I had a draft email to the feds ready to go if he didn’t sign my deal.” I shrug.

“What? His son’s embezzlement scheme?” Alfie pulls back to meet my glare.

“Yeah, Mr. Brown’s son has been stealing money from the company for about a year now.”

“You have proof?”

“Uh-huh.” I nod.

Alfie shares a look with Sammie J and then CJ. I don’t know what I just said. But both men stand up at the same time, excusing themselves.

“What just happened?” I whisper to Alfie.

“He’s not stealing his father’s money,” Alfie grits out between clenched teeth. “He’s stealing our money.”

Chapter Twenty-Six

Molly’s been quiet since she received that email with a signed contract in it. I honestly would have thought she’d be celebrating the win. I’m in awe of how she managed to secure that building. I also underestimated her. I didn’t think she’d use dirty tactics to get what she wanted. The fact that she did makes me fucking proud as hell.

My father is pissed. He pulled me away earlier to let me know just how much. Thankfully, my mother interrupted us and scolded him for talking business at her event. I would like to know what has Molly so quiet, though.

“Are you tired?” I ask her. We’re on our way to the second part of our night. But I can have the driver head home if she’s not feeling up to it.

“No,” she says.

“Did I do something to piss you off?” I’m pretty certain it’s not that, because I don’t think Molly would hold back if I had.

“No.”

“Okay, so do you want me to keep guessing what’s wrong or do you want to make it easy on me and just tell me?”

She turns in her seat. “Did I cause someone to be… unalived?”

“Why on earth would you think that?”

“Because I told you about Mr. Brown’s son embezzling money, and then you said it was your money he was stealing. Your cousins left the event right after finding that out. So, did I cause someone to be unalived?” she repeats.

“No,” I tell her. “You did not cause anything. Whatever happens to the Browns, Molly, is a result of their actions, not yours.”

“I also need Mr. Brown alive, Alfie. This deal needs to be finalized, and for that to happen, he needs to be breathing.” She sighs.

“Okay.” I nod. I already knew that, which is why I’m not going after him yet. “So what’s your plan for the other two buildings?”

Molly laughs. “Whatever it is, I’m not telling you. But I will get them.” She smiles at me.
