“Chiara? Right?” Dana asked.
I nodded. “Yeah.”
“She wasn’t a good woman,” Dana said.
“But does that make it right for me to have … killed her?”
Dana reached out and took my hand. “Forget about it, because right now, you’re seeing this wrong. Odin’s about to end the Serra Mafia for good. That is a lot of people who are going to die, but there is also something he hasn’t considered.”
“What?”
“Where he removes one, another will rise up.”
I looked at Dana. “This is never going to be over.”
“He needs to take it,” Dana said. “He already has the people in place and I know they will follow him. If the Serras did one thing, they made a lot of enemies, so it was going to be easy for them to do.”
“But he wants out,” I said. “He has a whole plan and once it’s over, he doesn’t want to look back.”
Dana nodded. “When it’s over, he is going to realize it, and knowing Odin, he will give you the choice to leave, but he is going to need someone by his side.”
“I’m part of the problem,” I said.
“You’re the solution.”
This was all too much, and I knew it was going to hurt Odin. We hadn’t talked about this. He wanted a life far away, but my family and the Mafia took it from him, and now there was no hope for him to ever truly be free, and I hated that for him.
Rubbing my temples, I felt a little sick. I hadn’t had my period in over a month, and I knew that could mean I was pregnant. It was still early, but everything was happening so fast.
“You love him, don’t you?” Dana asked.
“More than anything.”
“So, being by his side through all of this will be the easy part.”
I couldn’t help but smile because she did make it sound so easy.
“Thank you,” I said, leaning back.
“No, thankyou. You gave me so much by helping me escape. Did your dad figure it out?”
“No, but they did fix the fence, which was a pain in the ass.” I rubbed my temple.
“You were brave.”
I looked at Dana, and my stomach rumbled.
“You need to eat something.”
“Would you judge me if I told you all I want is ice cream?” I asked.
“Not at all.” Dana let out a giggle, and we made our way into the kitchen. There were many different varieties of ice cream. I couldn’t pick just one flavor, not when there was mint chocolate chip, peanut butter, and chocolate fudge. All of them sounded so good.
We had spoons at the ready, and I had just taken my first spoonful of peanut butter ice cream when the lights went out. The whole house went pitch-black. Dana let out a little gasp.
“What’s happening?” I asked. I hated the dark more than anything.
Dana grabbed my arm, and I let out a grunt, as I kept bumping into stuff, only to freeze as I heard the sound of gunshots. I didn’t know how it had happened but Serra’s men had found us, or perhaps even my father.
