An eerie silence followed.
And then he heard the floors inside creak and the door cameopen.
Jessica Fellows stood there, and she had a gun.She held asemiautomatic in her hand and pointed it straight at Keane’s head.“What thehell are you doing here?”
“Keane.”Olivia’s voice drew him away from that gun.“Please.Please don’t hurt him.”
There was a man standing close to her, and he had a gun inhis hand.Olivia was on her knees, and he would bet she hadn’t gotten there byherself.Rage warred with fear, but he pushed it down. She didn’t need thatright now.
“How did you find us?”Gladen asked.“Get him in here.”
Olivia’s hands were behind her back. She couldn’t use them. She moved away from the gun, and Gladen didn’t seem to notice.
“Let her go.”Keane managed to make his voice tremble a bit.“I know where she put the information.”
Olivia’s expression turned panicked.“He doesn’t.He doesn’tknow anything.I didn’t talk to anyone about it.I was trying to let my parentshave some alone time.I was going to talk to my dad when they get back fromtheir stay in Dallas.Keane doesn’t know.”
Were there only two of them?Sure, they both had guns, butJessica’s arm was trembling. She wasn’t used to holding a gun for long.It wasboth reassuring and concerning. She would be easy to disarm if he could getclose, but she would also be unpredictable.
“Move in here,” Gladen ordered.“Who did you bring?”
“No one.”He had to act a bit in this situation.“I saw yourcar fleeing the scene.I was right behind you.The cops are useless, so I leftGarrett with them and I came out searching for your car.”
Jessica looked out the door.“I don’t see anyone else. But Ialso don’t see a car.”
“I left it at the end of the road. Please let me talk toOlivia.I can convince her this isn’t a big deal,” he said.
“How do I know you’re not lying? How do I know you didn’tbring the cops?”Gladen sounded paranoid.
“Because if I’d brought the cops, do you think they wouldtell me to knock on the door? No.They would raid the place.”He needed to tellTaggart without alerting them. The micro camera couldn’t see the whole room.“Look, I understand that you’re nervous. There are only two of you, but youhave all the power. You have the guns and you have her, so I’m not going to doanything that could risk her life. You can tie me up.”
Two more minutes and Taggart and his team would be here.Heneeded to get close to her.
Gladen’s eyes narrowed.“Or I can cut my losses and flee thecountry.”
He moved his gun up, and Keane was out of time.He flung hisbody directly at Olivia, pain flashing through his shoulder as he took thebullet meant for her head. They hit the floor as the world exploded aroundthem.
ChapterTwenty-One
Olivia held Keane’s hand and felt Garrett’s armaround her shoulder as they sat in her father’s office. She looked up at herbrothers—who were supposed to be on their honeymoon.
“You didn’t have to come back.”Olivia felt guilty.Guiltyabout Keane getting shot.Guilty about being stupid enough to get kidnapped byidiots who didn’t even have a backup plan.Guilty about how much money her dadspent sending in a paramilitary team to rescue her.“I hate the fact that thisdisrupted your honeymoon.”
But mostly she felt bad about Keane, who had to havesurgery, and now he was going to have weeks of recovery.
Josh frowned down at her.“My sister got kidnapped.Believeme, none of us wanted to sit in a luxury resort while you were being tortured.”
She sighed and waved him off.“It was some hair pulling.Anda couple of bitch slaps.I will get laughed at in the kidnapping brackets.Iwon’t make it out of the first round.”
“I will beat the shit out of anyone who laughs at you,”Keane promised.
Josh’s eyes lit up with amusement.“Oh, I would like to seeyou take on Kala Taggart. She’ll be the one laughing.”
“See, there was a good kidnapping,” Olivia complained.“Shewas kidnapped by a ruthless sociopath who wanted to burn down the world andrule over the ashes. He had real torture devices.I had Jessica freakingFellows and a stun gun I’m pretty sure she got on sale at Walmart.Honestly, the real torture was having to listen to Scott whine.”
“I thought that was supposed to be classified,” Grim pointedout.
Olivia shrugged.“Kala claims what’s said at the club staysat the club.”
