Julia watched them disappear into the crowd before finally exhaling. Shakier than before, she resumed circling and observing.
A couple had taken over a bench near the wall. Their scene was careful, deliberate, and technically sound. The dom checked in, but not to the point of disrupting, responding quickly to the sub who seemed eager to please.
There were no missteps that she could see, and no lines crossed. But it was completely flat. Worse, there was no real connection. As an observer, it left her cold.
Julia moved on.
Near the center of the room, a small crowd had gathered around a suspension demonstration. Ropes hung from a freestanding frame, the dom working methodically, explaining as he went. His partner stood patiently, allowing herself to be positioned, tied, adjusted.
Julia drifted closer despite herself.
The knots were clean, if a little basic. Julia could have stepped in and done as well. Better, if she were honest.
Her mind drifted to another set of ropes. A different night. A different man.
Not the same. Not even close.
She moved out of the circle of spectators and drifted to the perimeter, taking in the room as a whole. Unsure what to do next, she simply stood there. Home sounded good—but lonely.
“You look like me.”
Julia glanced over. The woman standing beside her looked to be in her early thirties. Dark curls spilled over one shoulder, and her smile carried an easy warmth that felt out of place in the crowded club.
“How’s that?” Julia asked.
“You’re here,” the woman said, a Southern cadence rounding the words. “But you’re not finding it, either.”
That earned a genuine smile. “I guess that makes us kindred submissives. I’m Julia.”
“Rachel. I keep thinkin’ it’s the place,” she went on. The accent lingered without overpowering the words. Tennessee, maybe. Or Georgia. “Like if I try enough clubs, eventually one will feel right.”
“And it hasn’t.” It wasn’t a question.
“Nope.” She tipped one shoulder up in a half shrug. “But I’ve kept at it. Apparently, I’m stubborn as a mule.”
“I’m not sure I can match your tenacity,” Julia said with a sigh. “I think I’m going to head out. This just isn’t for me.”
“What about something besides a club? There’s a munch in Deerfield Beach next week,” Rachel added. “Smaller group. More low-key. Might be worth checking out.”
Julia almost laughed. “I know it.”
Rachel’s brows lifted. “You do?”
“I used to go.”
“Why’d you stop?”
Devil opened his home.
“Things changed,” she said instead.
Rachel studied her then crooked her finger. “Come with me for a second.”
Julia hesitated a beat, but followed her toward the alcoves, where a scene was already in progress. Not exactly a scene. A lesson.
An older dom stood behind a younger man holding a flogger, calmly adjusting his grip and stance while a kneeling sub waited patiently on a platform in front of them. Mid-forties, maybe, broad through the shoulders, sleeves rolled to his forearms. He exuded confidence and quiet authority.
“See how tense your wrist is?” he asked evenly. “Relax it, or you’ll throw too much from the elbow. Let the weight do the work.”
