“You’re not fine,” Seth interrupts. “You likely have a concussion, Mila.” Looking at me, he adds, “She refused treatment until she knew you were okay.”
“Not okay, Sunshine. We’re going to the hospital. Now.”
“Kash, I don’t need the...” Her voice fades out as her body goes limp in my arms.
“Mila! Mila, Sweetheart, wake up,” I beg, fear seizing my heart. Scooping her into my hold, I run toward the waiting ambulance. “Help! She fainted.”
They rush over, making me lay her on a stretcher. I follow behind them, getting ready to step in when one of them turns to stop me. “Save your breath. I’m getting in here and I’m not leaving her side.”
“I’ll meet you guys there.” Seth jogs back over toward the building where we left my car.
Right before the doors to the ambulance close, I hear Cassie’s voice call out, “Damn it, Kash. I need a statement!”
“Well, you know where I’ll be,” I shout as the door closes, and we speed off into the night.
I hope like hell they take him to another hospital, because if I find out my girl has any more injuries, or he did something I haven't discovered yet, he’s going to be visiting another part of the hospital.
The morgue.
Chapter Fifty-Six
Mila
Slowly opening my eyes, I’m almost afraid to see where I am this time. The last time I woke up, I was bound and kidnapped. God, I can’t believe I was kidnapped.
I look around my surroundings, noting the pale gray walls and monitors. There’s a TV mounted to one wall, while a whiteboard is on another. I’m relieved to find my hands aren’t bound anymore. Bandages line my wrists, and an IV is hooked up to my arm. Combining those clues with the telltale white, threadbare hospital blanket, I realize I’m safe.Thank God.
My head hurts, and my body aches. Raising my hand, I bring it up to my temple and wince when I find a large lump. Well, that explains the headache then.
My dad is asleep in a chair next to my bed, gently snoring.Oh no.Trying to push myself to a sitting position, I lose my balance and my arm goes out.
“Shit,” I softly swear.
“Better not let your father hear that,” my mom quips, coming into the room. “You had us so scared, Mila.”
Mom goes over and gives my dad a shake. “Some watchdog you are. You fell asleep on shift, Daniel.” He wakes up quickly, sitting up straight in the chair. His eyes find mine, and he sighs in relief.
“I told you I shouldn’t have left,” Kash’s voice interrupts at my side. Dad’s face quickly morphs from relief to a scowl.
Glaring at Kash, Dad opens his mouth to say something, but I interrupt him. “What happened? How’d I get here?”
I direct my question at Kash as I know he’s the only one who can fill in the blanks.
“I don’t even know where to start.” Kash looks downat the ground. His clothes are disheveled and his hair’s a mess, strands sticking up in different directions. He’s usually put together, so seeing him with wrinkly clothes and messy hair makes me wonder how long I’ve been out.
“How about you start with the part where your psycho ex had my daughter fucking kidnapped? How about we start there?” Dad all but shouts at him.
Kash stares back at him, quiet at first, then he speaks in a low, even tone. “Daniel?—”
“That’s Mr. Morgan to you,” Dad spits out.
“Stop. Enough,” I snap.
Mom stands between the two of them and gives my dad a stern look. “You know this isn’t actually his fault, Daniel. Kash is not responsible for what those people did.”
“Oh, I don’t know, Mom. I think I’m with Dad on this one,” Mara’s voice cuts in as she walks into my room. Isn’t there a limit to how many people can be here? I want everyone out other than Kash. I need to talk to him and find out what happened. I can’t do that if everyone is going to be arguing and fighting every thirty seconds.
“You’re one to talk,” Kash retorts, scowling at her. Mara glares back and opens her mouth to respond, but I cut everyone off.
