"Then they'll have to go through me." I pull her closer, pressing a kiss to her temple. "You're not just a weapon, Celeste. You're not a tool. Whatever Konstantin intended, you chose differently. You chose us."

"I know." She leans into me, and I feel her resolve settling. "I just want them to see me. Not what I was designed to be."

"They will. And if they don't..." I shrug. "I've replaced inner circle members before."

"That's not comforting."

"It's not meant to be comforting. It's meant to be true." I tip herchin up, making her meet my eyes. "You are mine. Bonded. Permanent. Anyone who threatens that threatens me. And I did not survive six hundred years by tolerating threats."

Her response washes into me unbidden. Love, gratitude, and underneath it all, a fierce determination that matches my own.

"Okay," she says softly. "Let's go tell them everything."

The inner circleassembles in the conference room at sunset.

The full council. Something that hasn't happened in months. Marcellus stands at his usual position by the door, face unreadable. Nadia sits at the head of the table, her expression sharp and assessing. Julian occupies the seat to her left. Elena is there too.

But tonight there are others.

Ethan sits near the window. His nervous energy is more pronounced than usual, fingers tapping against his tablet. Isabelle has come in from the secure off-site location where she manages the network's finances. Celeste hasn't met her before, I realize. The petite French vampire watches everything with cool assessment. Caleb, who runs the containment facilities, occupies a chair in the corner, dark eyes cataloging every detail. And Dr. Elias Sullivan, whose work in the human medical community keeps him away from the compound most nights, sits stiffly at the far end of the table, silver hair immaculate, bearing formal.

Everyone called in. Everyone present.

Whatever doubts anyone had about the severity of this situation, the full assembly eliminates them.

And then there's Celeste, standing beside me at the far end of the room. Not sitting. Not subordinate. Standing as my equal, my partner, my bonded mate.

Every vampire in the room can hear it. Our heartbeat, pulsingin perfect synchronization. I see Nadia's eyes flicker to my chest, then to Celeste's. See Ethan freeze mid-tap on his tablet. See Caleb's eyebrows rise almost imperceptibly. The questions forming behind their careful masks.

"Thank you all for coming," I begin. "I know some of you have traveled significant distances on short notice. What I'm about to share does not leave this room."

Nods around the table. Even Nadia, though her jaw is tight.

"Three nights ago, we walked into a trap. The meeting with Konstantin was a diversion. While we were occupied at the warehouse, his forces were moving on the compound. They were minutes from breaching the walls."

Marcellus goes very still. Nadia's mask cracks, revealing genuine shock. Ethan mutters something under his breath, pulling up data on his tablet.

"My contacts reported troop movements," Ethan says, "but nothing suggested a full assault. How did we miss this?"

"I don't know." I won't lie to my people. "Whether he fed us false intelligence, used routes we weren't monitoring, or simply moved faster than we anticipated, we missed it. That's something we need to address going forward."

I let the weight of that settle before continuing.

"During the meeting, Konstantin revealed his hand. He told us his forces were already in position, minutes from breaching the compound walls. Everyone inside, staff, donors, guards, would be slaughtered." I pause, letting them absorb the image. "Then he offered a trade. Call off the attack in exchange for one thing: Celeste."

I feel Celeste tense beside me, but she stays silent.

"Celeste agreed. She walked out with Konstantin and Valentina willingly, believing it was the only way to save everyone here."

"She surrendered?" Nadia's voice is sharp. "To Konstantin?"

"She saved every person in this compound." I let the weight of that settle. "Including everyone at this table."

Isabelle leans forward, her French accent soft but precise. "And yet she is standing here. How did she escape?"

"The exchange didn't go as Konstantin planned. Celeste killed Valentina, her maker, and I engaged Konstantin directly. He escaped, but not before we learned certain information."

"Valentina is dead?" Caleb's quiet voice carries from his corner. "You're certain?"
