“It’s going to be perfect. I’m so happy for you.”
“Cheers, man. I want you to be happy too.” Concern is laced in his voice.
And once again I do the one thing I swore I’d never do to Hunter.
I lie.
“I am happy.”
Deacon - I’ve got some information you may be interested in.
Leo – Well, hello to you too, sunshine.
Deacon - Why waste time with pleasantries?
Leo - Oh no. Who kicked your puppy?
Deacon - No one, but you’re currently getting on my last nerve.
Leo - Oh great, I’ve still got one to go.
Hunter - Leave the man alone, Leo.
Deacon - Cheers H
Leo - Ganging up on me isn’t cool
Hunter - Stop being weird then.
Deacon - Seriously I haven’t got time for this. Meet me at the bar at seven and I’ll tell you what I know.
“She is going to flip that we’ve done this without her knowing. She is the CEO, and she should be here.” Going behind Ria’sback to use Deacon and his connections just isn’t sitting right with me.
“I’ll talk to her when we know more.” Hunter swirls his scotch in his glass.
“And Jade? Does she know about your little plan?”
“No,” he says quietly, before downing the rest of his scotch. “I know it’s wrong. I’ll deal with the consequences later when I’ve fixed it.”
“It just makes me uncomfortable. Those women are more intelligent than we are. They should be here. You’ve got to stop being protective.”
“We’ll talk with them tomorrow when we’ve seen everything.”
“Evening, gentlemen.” Deacon slips in the booth next to Hunter and places a sleek black folder on the table. “This”—he taps the folder—“makes for interesting reading.” He signals to the server to bring another round of drinks before he opens the folder. “Especially this part right here.” He points to a sentence and Hunter and I lean over.
“What the fuck?” we both say in unison.
“I know. I was shocked too. But now it all makes perfect sense.”
“That snake.” Hunter grabs the folder and flips through the pages.
“I had no idea they even knew each other.” I place my head in my hands just as a fresh glass of scotch is placed in front of me.
“Me neither.” I can physically feel the rage rolling off Hunter’s body as he continues to go through the document. “You’re kidding me?” He throws the folder down and points to a particular paragraph for me to look at.
“Fuck.” I stare wide-eyed at the paper, not believing what I’m reading.
“Fuck, indeed,” Hunter snarls.
