“I didn’t accuse you.” His hand was still outstretched, awaiting the book.
“Then what do you want the book for?”
“It is not your concern. Give it to me.”
Her gaze swept him. No heraldry on the tunic he wore over his chainmail. The red cross was absent. “You’re not a Templar Knight.”
His hand lowered to his side and his fingers clenched into a fist. “No.”
What was he doing at the chateau? And what did he want with Brother Nicolas? She knew not to ask many questions, but it was too late for that. Her shoulders sagged. She removed one hand from the book and began to stretch it out toward the leader. “Here.”
She wasn’t getting away easily.
She pushed the book toward him as if she were handing it to him. At the last moment, she pulled it back and locked her foot behind his. She shoved him backward into the other men.
As he tumbled into them, she turned and down the hallway, away from the stairway and any chance at escape.
“Get her!”
