He rose to his full height. “My Templar brothers are my family.”

Her gaze traversed him from head to foot, and she lifted an eyebrow.

He didn’t like the look she bestowed upon him. “They are family even if we are not bound by blood,” he insisted. “I would do anything for them. Just as your father did.”

Confusion flashed in her blue eyes, and she scowled. “What do you mean by that? My father had a family, and it wasn’t the Templars.”

Landyn led his horse to the river. “John respected the traditions and the ways of the Templars. He was incredibly loyal to them. In fact, he wanted to be a Templar Knight. John was the one who convinced me to become a Templar, to serve the order.”

Raven’s frown deepened, and she stepped up beside him.

“We were good friends,” Landyn said, remembering. “Your father was a strong man. He was proud of you girls and loved you very much.” He looked at her. “You were the reason he gave up becoming a Templar Knight.”
