I lifted an eyebrow. “The doctor at the jail knows about your pregnancy.”

“They say they test every female inmate.”

“What about a doctor outside the jail?”

“I haven’t been to one.”

Shit. I didn’t want to care about this kid.

Exhaling, I shook my head. “Bre, you need to be under the care of a doctor. Dad would want that.”

“It’s been… a lot.”

“And stress isn’t good either. My attorney said that cases like this often take time, maybe over a year or two. Take care of yourself and the baby.”

“I can’t go back to work.”

“You’re on paid leave,” I said. “I’ll check with HR, but I believe that means you still have your insurance.”

She feigned a smile. “Thank you, Vee. I just knew if I could talk to you that you’d see my side. I understand why Reid loved you so much.”

Fin and I walked Bre to the door.

“How can I get in touch with you?” she asked.

“I don’t know that you should.”

“You can contact me,” Fin volunteered.

Turning around, I walked away, back into my condo as Fin exchanged numbers with Bre. I couldn’t decide how I felt about the two of them in contact with one another. After all, I didn’t stop Fin from talking to her, mostly because I wanted to know what she knew. As I began to unpack the groceries I bought, Fin shut the front door and walked back to the kitchen.

“What do you think?” he asked.

Unexpected tears came to my eyes as I shook my head.

Fin reached for the box of fettuccine noodles in my hand and placed it on the counter before tugging me to his wide chest and wrapping his arms around me. A sandalwood cloud filled my senses as I laid my cheek against his soft sweater. Beneath the fabric, Fin’s heart beat a steady rhythm. Closing my eyes, I felt the sting of unwanted tears.

Pushing away, I looked up. Fin manifested my stress. Muscles and tendons pulled taut in his neck and his cheeks. His chiseled jaw was set and sharp.

“I don’t know why I’m crying.”

“Tears are an outlet.” He reached for my shoulders. “They’re not only to show sadness but also happiness.”

I scoffed. “I’m pretty sure I don’t have anything to be happy about.”

He tilted his face and pressed his strong lips together. “Nothing?”

“You.” I let my forehead fall to his chest. Looking up, I forced a smile. “My dad will live on.”

“In you.”

“Yeah, but not only in me. He might have a son.”
