“Why not?”
“They’ve been hiding in Mexico.”
“What’s their stories?”
“They helped Butler lure his vics.”
After a long silence, Luciano said, “I have another assignment for you.”
“Whatever you need.”
“You’re gonna like this one.”
“If it gets me one step closer to finding Mara’s killer, I’ll love it.”
“This one will put you at the front of the line,” Luciano said with a smile.
The plane landed at Dulles, they made it through the small terminal reserved for private jets without incident.
It was just past seven in the morning.
“I arranged a meeting,” Luciano said as they approached the large, black SUV waiting at the curb.
Luciano’s personal driver opened the back door. On a nod, Luciano ducked inside.
After Carrera sat beside him, he asked, “Do you instruct them not to talk?”
“They learn to use their words sparingly, and they never say my name in public.”
“Why the hell not?”
“I have enemies everywhere,” Luciano explained. “Why draw attention to myself?”
He had a point.
Once en route, Luciano suggested lunch on his yacht.
“I gotta work,” Carrera said. “How ‘bout dinner?”
“Lunch.”
“I can’t.”
“Trust me, Carrera, you can.”
“Is this like that crap you used to pull on me when we were kids?”
Luciano laughed, something he rarely did.
“No, this is lunch,” Luciano said. “That was me pranking you. Go to work. We’ll meet on my yacht at noon. All we need is an hour.”
“We?”
Luciano fell silent. Conversation over.
While Carrera would never admit it… he was curious. Curious enough to take the bait.
AT TEN PAST TWELVE,Carrera stepped onto Omega, his cousin’s sixty-foot, Princess Skybridge yacht. Luciano and Sin were relaxing on the stern, each sipping a glass of red wine.
