“My mom sprained her ankle,” Rebel said, “but she’s fine otherwise. Z took a tumble as well, but he’s okay.”

“Badly bruised ego,” Brit added.

“Our kids look like you,” Rebel said. “Willow’s got Slash’s blue eyes, and Clark has Carrera’s brown ones.”

“Ugh.” Slash rose. “I’m gonna take off.”

“No, I’ll go,” Carrera said.

“What is going on with you two?” Rebel asked.

“We can’t stand each other,” Slash said. “And I break out in hives if I come within ten feet of him.”

Rebel and Brit laughed.

“I didn’t know you knew Carrera,” Brit said.

“Bad blood from a long, long time ago,” Slash replied.

“In a galaxy far, far away,” Carrera added.

More laughter from Rebel and Brit.

“You and I—we’re not friends, so don’t stick your tongue down my throat again.” A low rumbly growl escaped her before she set down the baby’s spoon.

After kissing each baby on their food-stained cheeks, she said to Brit and Rebel, “Have fun tonight. I’ll see you guys next week.”

“Stay,” Carrera said to Slash. “I’ll take off.”

“The party is still on,” Brit said. “Our part-time nanny is coming over to watch them. You guys have to stay, but you don’t have to talk to each other. Slash, we’re going for a run. Babe, please finish feeding the twins. After they digest, put them downfor their mini-naps. You and Carrera can go for a run or to the gym when we get back.”

“The queen has spoken,” Rebel said.

Carrera laughed. “Works for me. Slash, you good with that?”

Slash ignored him, her attention on Brit. “As long as I don’t have to talk to him or even look at him, I’ll stay.” She stood and glanced over at him. “I’ll change in the guest room.”

She’s still crazy about me.

Excitement pounded through him.

After the women left, Rebel said, “You could cut the sexual tension with a knife. What’s goin’ on with you two?”

Slash

As she andBrit jogged through the beautiful McLean neighborhood, Slash inhaled the warm summer air, turned her face toward the sun. Fifteen minutes passed before the tension in her shoulders and the knots in her guts started to subside.

“Something’s going on,” Brit said. “You want to talk about it?”

Slash wasn’t much of a talker, especially when it came to her past. She lived for the moment, looked to the future, and kept all the yesterdays in the rearview mirror.

“You’re a good friend,” Slash said.

“Same,” Brit said. “We’ve come a long way since the day we met.”

Slash laughed. “You mean when I saw you at ALPHA and pulled my Glock on you.”

Brit smiled. “Yeah, but in that split second?—”
