Their embrace was filled with love and joy, passion and hope.
When he set her back down, she said, “I was definitely not expecting that.”
He held out the engagement ring. “This is Elsa’s. My grandfather gave it to her, and she wants you to have it.”
She offered him her left hand, and he slid on the ring, but it only made it as far as her second knuckle.
“It’s beautiful,” she said. “I love that it was Elsa’s.”
“I thought we could design a ring around the center stone. Add more diamonds?—”
“That sounds fun.” Her adorable smile made him laugh. “I gotta say, I’m liking how you spoil me.” She pulled the ring off her finger. “We’ll have it resized and see about a design, but I might leave it like this.” She draped her arms over his shoulders. “Let’s get in bed and celebrate.”
“I’m all in, babe,” he replied.
“You’re about to be,” she said with a gleam in her eyes.
Slash
Tuesday late afternoon, while Slash was packing up to leave ALPHA, her phone buzzed with a text from Jazz.
Guess what? The house is done. Yay! Come by and see it
Though Slash was surprised to hear from her, Jazz had been making an effort to be nice.
Sure. I’ll text Carrera
Dots appeared, then another text.
I thought we could spend a few minutes just the two of us. I was hoping we could become friends. Russell is here, but I’m kicking him out lol. One glass of wine, then we’ll meet the guys at Russell’s restaurant
Slash shouldered her computer bag, grabbed her handbag, and made her way out of the building. Outside, dark gray storm clouds blanketed the sky as a light rain fell.
Damn.
She’d been hoping to go for a long run, then a swim in the pool. Thunder grumbled miles away, then a flash of summer lightning illuminated the sky. Slash jumped in her SUV.
I’ll swing by. Address?
Jazz texted the address.
See you in 15
Her fingers flew over the keyboard as she typed out a text to Carrera.
Babe, Jazz invited me to her house for a glass of wine. Renovations are done. She thought you and Russell could meet us later at his restaurant. Does that work for you?
After sending the message, Slash pulled up her playlist and drove out.
Carrera
Carrera pulled into his garage, killed the engine, and headed into the house. G-ma wasn’t in the family room or the kitchen. He glanced onto the screened porch, but she wasn’t there either.
“G-ma?” he called out.
No response as he walked into his home office and set down his computer bag. His phone rang with a call from the Arlington County Detention Center.
“Santini,” he answered.
