“You’re being very brave. I’m proud of you. He’ll treat you right this time.”
“I’m in a training session all morning,” Slash said. “I’ll have my phone with me, so call me for any reason.”
“Whoever burned down my house isn’t going to come here in the middle of the day?—”
“You wouldn’t open the door?—”
“Amanda May, when have I ever opened my front door to a stranger? Now, I have a great security system where the computer talks to me. Go, do your combat training. Maybe one day, I’ll get to watch you.”
While Slash finished her breakfast, an idea took hold. “I’m gonna get into a shit-ton of trouble, but you’re coming with me.”
Ten minutes later, they were out the door. Slash knew she’d hear about it from Dakota, but in this case, it was better to ask for forgiveness than for permission. She pulled down the dirt road leading to ALPHA’s black site, where they held BLACK OPS training. She pulled into the hangar, brought Elsa to the entrance.
As she was calling Rebel, the hangar door opened, and he and Brit drove in. They made their way over.
“Looks like Slash has broken the rules again,” Rebel said. “Good to see you, Elsa. This is my wife, Britain.”
“What a beautiful couple,” Elsa said. “I know I’m not supposed to be here, but Amanda May didn’t want me to be alone this morning.”
“I’m sorry about your home,” Rebel said. “Any leads?”
“Nothing,” Elsa replied.
“Slash, I heard you rescued Elsa,” Rebel said.
“Hell, yeah,” Slash replied. “I know Elsa’s not allowed here, but I was hoping for a one-off.”
“Put her in body armor and bring a chair outside,” Rebel said.
Slash grinned. “Best boss ever.”
Rebel overrode the system so Elsa could enter the building.
She, Elsa, and Brit made their way to the women’s locker room where she and Brit suited up.
Addison entered, did a double take, then started laughing. “What is happening?”
“It’s Bring Your Grandmother to Work Day,” Slash said, and they laughed.
After helping Elsa into a Kevlar vest, she handed her shooter earmuffs and eye protection. Then, Slash pulled her weapons from her locker.
Elsa gasped as the women loaded up, but she didn’t say a word. With her rucksack on her back, Slash rolled a conference room chair down the hall. Once outside, she put the chair a safe distance from target practice.
“You have to stay here,” Slash said. “We use live rounds, so you can’t roam around.”
“This is the most exciting thing I’ve ever done,” Elsa said.
Hawk, along with Sin, Dakota, and Prescott, exited out the back door.
“Elsa,” Dakota said, “What are you doing here?”
“I’m not here.”
Sin laughed. “Slash is behind this, isn’t she?”
With a smile, Elsa zipped her lips.
“Good answer,” Dakota said. “I never saw you.”
