“That would be great because we’re not getting anywhere.”
“We? I thought you’d been promoted to King of the FBI.”
Carrera chuffed out a laugh.
“No worries about Karen’s comment on the secret agency,” Alexandra said. “I’mnotfollowing up on that. Sin would murder me in my sleep.”
Carrera wasn’t surprised Alexandra knew about ALPHA. Her husband, Crockett, and Sin had been close friends for decades.
“Tell Crockett I’m using a Spy Fly.”
Alexandra smiled. “He’ll love that. We’re sorry we can’t make your holiday river cruise.”
They said their goodbyes, and she drove away. As he made his way to his motorcycle, he checked the Spy Fly video, but Greg hadn’t entered the club all evening.
Where are you?
He pulled on his helmet, mounted his bike, and rode into the night.
While the set-up with Claude Amos and Alexandra been a good idea, he hadn’t learned anything new. Karen wasn’t talking, she was sticking with her story, and she was protecting the owner. For a woman who ran her mouth about ALPHA every chance she got, she was tight-lipped as hell about everything else.
ON THE FOURTH OF JULY,at seventy-thirty in the evening, Carrera’s boat cruise party was well under way. The Potomac River excursion had started with cocktails at five, they sailed at six, sat down for dinner at seven. His guests were seated inside, though a few had ventured outside to take in the sights as they rolled slowly down the river.
He and Slash were seated at a table with G-ma, his dad, his cousins Luciano and Teddy, his sister Jazz and her boyfriend, Russell.
Nearby, Sin and Evangeline were dining with Dakota and Providence. Stryker and Emerson were at a table with Cooper and Danielle, and Jericho and Liv. Right next to him were Hawk and Addison, Prescott and Jacqueline, and Rebel and Brit. Like every year, he’d also invited his entire staff at Carrera cruises. For those who’d opted to work, they were paid extra for working the event.
He chuckled.
“What?” Slash whispered.
“All that’s missing is the President.”
“I’m sure he’d love a few hours on a Carrera cruise. Don’t forget Z.”
“I am Z,” he murmured.
She caressed his shoulder. “You’re baby Z, like baby Yoda.” She gave his shoulder an affectionate squeeze before letting go.
“You really know how to build a guy’s ego,” he said.
“You don’t need my help with your ego, but, how’s this? Baby, you’re one of the most powerful, influential men in law enforcement.” She arched an eyebrow. “That’s actually the truth.”
“Crazy huh?”
“Maybe I was smart to hitch my wagon to you.”
“I hitched my wagon toyou,” he said. “Let’s not forget who really holds all the power.”
The playful gleam in her eyes made him smile.
She held the power, and she knew it.
Tonight, she looked so stunning he couldn’t keep his eyes off her. She’d worn her hair up in a twist, a simple black halter dress, and open-toed stilettos. Around her neck, she wore the diamond necklace he’d bought her.
“Elegant, beautiful, and all mine,” he whispered.
The servers appeared with trays of desserts, hot pots of coffee, and flutes of champagne. When the servers finished, he stood, his champagne flute in hand. Conversations continued until Jericho whistled.
