“Same time, tomorrow?” Z asked.

“I need a few days to review everything. How’s Friday?”

“It’s a short week. Saturday is the Fourth of July. We’re off Friday.”

“Monday, then.”

“You’re in the fray upstairs,” Z warned. “Too many people want to take your power or shove their head up your ass so they can learn things they have no business knowing.”

Carrera chuffed out a laugh. “That’s a visual I don’t need.”

“Relax, Philip,” Sin said. “Carrera knows what he’s doing.”

“I won’t be intimidated, and they can’t take my power,” Carrera said.

“With power comes great responsibility,” Z said.

“I got this,” Carrera said before he and Sin made their way to his car, parked nearby.

After Sin drove out of the White House grounds, he asked, “What’s going on?”

“Z had tails on us,” Carrera said.

“Liv Savage, Jericho’s wife,” Sin said. “I saw her following me a few times. I expected Z would vet us.”

“He’s concerned we’re close to Luciano.”

Sin chuffed out a laugh. “Weareclose to Luciano. I’m sure Z tried to find out what we’re doing, but even he can’t. Luciano’s good at covering his tracks.”

After a beat, Sin said, “Watch your back at work. Peter Hirzog was gunning for Luther’s job from the moment he retired.”

“What’s his story?” Carrera asked.

“He’s been with the Bureau for decades,” Sin said. “Luciano can’t stand him, but I never asked why. There are some problems I don’t need to know about… until I need to fix them.”

Sin’s phone rang. “It’s my wife.” He tapped the button on the steering wheel. “Hey, babe, I’ve got Carrera with me.”

“Hi, honey,” Evangeline said. “Carrera, congrats on the new gig.”

“Thanks, Evangeline. I’m looking forward to seeing you this weekend.”

“Me, too,” she replied. “What can I bring?”

“Your husband,” Carrera replied.

She laughed. “Of course my husband. Do you need me to bring dessert?”

“I’ve got staff working the event.”

“On the fourth?” Sin asked. “You’re a tough boss.”

“They volunteered,” Carrera replied. “Being on the water for the fireworks is a great gig.”

“Babe, we’ve got a graduation ceremony tonight,” Evangeline said.

Sin and Evangeline founded and ran The Develin Home for Runaway Children.

“I’ll be at the office in thirty,” he said.
