The sniper in the black hoodie.

No, that’s not right. I’m losin’ it.

But over the years, Rebel had learned to trust his gut.

She’s the one.

Feeling like he’d gotten the wind knocked out of him, he glared at her.

“I’m gonna shower,” Addison said, snapping Rebel back.

Brit bolted after her, but before she left the kitchen, she turned back.

There was something about the way the light and shadow played off her face. Without a doubt, Britain Skye was the sniper who’d taken out the drug dealers and put an abrupt end to a case he’d been working for months.

The excitement and desire at seeing her gave way to anger. Pure, full-on anger.

Who the hell is she?

Britain

Brit wanted to bolt, but she needed to come clean with Rebel. He deserved to hear from her what had happened, what had gone down… and gone wrong.

She’d apologize, hewouldn’tforgive her, and she’d move on. What else could she do?

Hiding in her bedroom all evening was a coward move, so that wasn’t an option. She wasn’t going to discuss it in front of Addison and Hawk. Despite her and Addison sharing their well-kept secrets about their careers, neither had gone into details.

Some things were better left unsaid.

In a deafening silence, she went upstairs with Addison. Just as she was about to duck into the guest room, Addison wrapped a soft hand around her arm.

“What’s wrong? I thought you said you liked Rebel.”

“I’m totally fine, and yeah, Rebel’s cool.”

Addison furrowed her brow. “Cool? You confided that you had it bad for him. You acted all weird just now.”

“Are you trying to play matchmaker?” It was Brit’s stupid attempt at deflecting the conversation away from the truth.

“We’d invited Rebel to hang with us before you came into town. If you’re not into him, it’s okay.” With a sweet smile, Addison continued on to her bedroom.

I gotta fix things between Rebel and me.

Brit hated this kind of thing. Talking through problems wasn’t her strong suit, but she had to fess up. Anything less would be wrong.

I’m better than that. He deserves the truth.

Brit showered, dried her hair, and dressed in an oversized sweater rich with earthly tones, and brown leggings. While her initial reaction had been one of excitement, the reality of seeing him had slammed her… hard.

She went downstairs to find Hawk and Rebel grilling on the balcony.

A dinner salad sat in a large bowl on the island while potatoes baked in the oven. She loved how they’d taken charge in the kitchen. They hadn’t waited around for the women to cook.

She opened a cupboard, pulled down the bottle of McCallan, and poured herself a finger’s worth. As she tossed it back, the slider opened.

She locked eyes with the most handsome man she’d ever seen in her life, and her heart fluttered wildly in her chest. The reaction was instant, immediate, and oh-so intense.

She’d tossed back enough liquid courage to get the job done without stumbling over her words. Now, it was time to rip the Band-Aid and put the truth out there.
