Sin drove around back, tapped the visor, and a hangar door rolled up. Once inside, the door closed. The large, spit-shine room was filled with a dozen or more identical black SUVs.
He and Sin exited the Mercedes.
As they approached the door, Sin made a call. “We’re here.”
From what Rebel could tell, the retina scanner wouldn’t let Sin inside because Rebel wasn’t cleared to enter.
A moment later, Sin’s identical twin, Dakota Luck, opened the door, a laptop under his arm. Sin gestured for Rebel, who crossed the threshold.
Once inside, Dakota extended his hand. When Rebel shook it, Dakota pulled him in for a hug. “Good to see you, brother. Let’s talk in the conference room.”
As their dress shoes clacked on the linoleum floor, Rebel eyed the closed office doors lining the hallway.
Dakota, also wearing a suit, entered a conference room and an overhead light flicked on. He sat at the head of the table. Rebel eased down as Sin pulled out the chair across from him.
“Cooper’s been trying to get you into ALPHA for a while,” Dakota began, “but your goal has always been HRT.”
“Thatwasthe goal,” Rebel replied.
“I’m putting together an elite group within ALPHA called BLACK OPS,” Dakota explained. “It started as an international organization going after American criminals who’ve fled abroad.”
“Gotcha,” Rebel replied.
“We’re expanding to create a rescue team, primarily for the US., but not ruling out overseas missions.”
“Hmm.” Now, Dakota had his full attention.
The twins exchanged glances.
“You hooked him,” Sin said. “How many years did that take?”
Dakota chuckled. “I haven’tyet, and too many.” He slid his gaze to Rebel. “I want you to run the rescue team.”
Rebel smiled. How could he not? Then, he shifted his gaze to Sin. “You’re right. It’s a day I won’t forget.” Then his smile fellaway. “There’s something I’ve wanted to get my hands on for a while?—”
“The Dillinger cold case is yours, ifyou take the position,” Dakota said. “But you gotta work it off the clock.”
Holy hell, they’re handing me my dream job… and then some.
“There’s overlap with ALPHA and BLACK OPS,” Dakota continued. “ALPHA employees don’t know about BLACK OPS, but BLACK OPS is part of ALPHA.”
“If I decide to interview an Op, I’ll be chill,” Rebel said. “Who’s in BLACK OPS now?”
“Sin, Prescott, Hawk, Addison, and me,” Dakota said. “I’m thinking, Slash—Amanda Maynard—would be a great fit, but you’d have the final say.”
“I acce?—”
“There is one thing,” Dakota said.
Ah, fuck me. Here comes the BS.
“Providence and Cooper are getting slammed with too many cases, so they’re focused on expanding the team. Until yours is fully operational, you’d carry a small caseload.”
“Max, three cases,” Rebel pushed back.
Dakota extended his hand. “Deal. Welcome to BLACK OPS, Joaquin.”
Rebel shook Dakota’s hand, then Sin’s.
