Rebel grinned. “We’re having a baby.”

“Congratulations!” Hawk said.

“No one knows,” Brit explained. “Don’t tell Dad.”

“Of course not,” Addison replied.

Together, they exited the building.

At the SUV, Addison grabbed her things, then she and Hawk took off toward the helo.

Once inside the vehicle, Brit said, “I knew in my gut that you’d come.”

He leaned over, kissed her. “Thank you for trusting me to show up for you.”

“When things got intense, I thought about risking my life to save Addison’s.” She clasped his hand. “Our tiny pea baby made me realize I had to make it out of there alive.”

“Brit, you’re my entire world. I will always do whatever it takes to keep you and our child safe.” One more kiss before he said, “Let’s get the hell outta here.”

“And never, ever come back.”

On the drive home, Brit fell asleep. She shot to attention when he cut the engine in the parking garage of his condo.

“What’s happening?” she asked. “Where are we?”

“We’re home, babe.”

In the elevator, she wrapped her arms around him, snuggled close. Ten minutes later, she was tucked in bed, sound asleep.

Joaquin

Too keyed up to sleep,Rebel left the bedroom, pulled his Fender off the living room wall, and started playing.

Without plugging the guitar into the amp, the music was loud enough for him to hear, soft enough not to wake Brit. Strumming calmed him. The image of Honor pointing a gun at Brit had struck a chord in his very core.

She’s safe and she’s okay.

After playing long enough for the tension to subside, he glanced at the time.

Eleven-thirty.

Normally, he wouldn’t call his mom this late, but today wasnota normal day. He set the guitar down, called her.

She answered right away. “Hi, honey. Everything okay?”

“All good, Mom. I was hoping to talk to you in person, but?—”

“We can do a video chat.” She hung up. Seconds later, she was calling him back.

He answered and her face appeared on the screen. Dressed in her robe, she was sitting on the sofa.

“I found the man who murdered Dad.”

She shot to attention, her eyes grew large. “Tell me everything, Joaquin.”

“He went into hiding at a doomsday cult in Virginia. Not too long ago, he returned to the area. He had a big stash of drugs that he was about to offload.”

“Fentanyl?”
