“Britain, I knew the minute I saw you at Thanksgiving. Hawk told me he brought me a present and sent me upstairs to meet you. When I walked into the kitchen, I said to myself, ‘There she is.’”
Her joyful smile sent relief flowing through him.
She’s having our child.
He held up the pregnancy stick. “Best present ever.” Then, he collected her hands in his while his gaze roamed over her face, stilling in her eyes. “I will be here for you… always. You and I are a team—a damn good one. I love you, Britain. Trust that, and trust me to do right by you.” He kissed her hand. “We got this.”
Her sweet smile made him smile. “We do.”
He clasped her face in his hands, kissed her longingly. “And here I said I want to take things slow. This is the universe telling me I’m definitely not in charge.”
After sharing another kiss, she kissed his cheek.
“Tell me what happened with Jordan,” she said.
“Not yet.” He moved off the sofa. “I’ll be right back.” He walked into his bedroom, pulled the gift bag from his closet.
Back on the sofa, he set it on the floor in front of her. “Happy Valentine’s Day.”
She peeked in the bag. “Wow, three presents.” She opened the large box. After moving the tissue paper out of the way, she held up the Bohemian-style dress. “This is so pretty, and it’s from my favorite store.” Then, she pulled out a pair of brown leggings that matched the dress. “Thank you. I love it.”
“You can exchange it if you?—”
She kissed him. “Absolutely not. It’s perfect.”
Then, she fished out the next box. Inside was a pair of turquoise earrings. “I love turquoise.”
“You’ve got a turquoise choker.”
“Thank you, baby.” She slipped the dangly blue-green earrings into her ears, pulled her hair away.
“They look beautiful on you.” He reached into the bag, handed her the last gift. “I love you, Britain.”
She took the small jewelry box, opened it, and gasped. Her gaze found his. “Diamonds.” A smile filled her face. “I can’t even believe this.” With gentle fingers, she lifted out the diamond pendant on the platinum chain. Tears clouded her eyes. “It’s like you knew.”
Inside the larger heart dangled a smaller one, round diamonds covering the perimeter of both hearts.
“Two hearts,” he said. “For my true love and our baby.”
She clasped it on, wrapped her arms around him, and kissed him. “You’re too good to me.”
“This is me, loving you.”
“I wish we could spend the day celebrating.” She pushed off the sofa. “But we’ve got a ton of work to do.”
Hand-in-hand, they went into the kitchen.
“Should I assume no caffeine for you?—”
“And no alcohol,” she replied. “I want to make sure I do everything I can to keep our tiny pea baby healthy.”
“I can give up the booze—” he began.
She opened the fridge. “I don’t mind if you drink.”
“But I gotta have a cuppa joe in the morning.”
“Go for it.”
