Britain

At the police station,Brit entered the interrogation room alone.

Liliana sat there, a bottle of water on the desk. Her eyes narrowed at the sight of her daughter. “You’re a traitor, Britain Skye.”

Ignoring that comment, Brit sat across the table from her. “Let’s talk about why you’re here.”

“According to you, I killed a bunch of people.”

“That’s right,” Brit said.

Liliana crossed her arms. “Looks like your dad sucked you into his sick world of law enforcement. Rules, rules and more fucking rules. I’m guessing Addison is law enforcement as well. Daddy’s little girls.”

This isn’t about me. Keep this on her.

Brit leaned back. “Did you know that there was bullying going on at Honor’s boarding school?”

“Honor was afraid of her own shadow,” Liliana said. “I told her to ignore the bullying and take advantage of the great education she was getting. That school was expensive. Craig—the cult leader and her biological father—never parted with his money, so she should have been grateful he’d done anything at all for her.”

“So, you knew she was being bullied?”

“Honor told me there was a group of girls who picked on the other students.”

“What did you do about it?”

Liliana huffed. “I just told you. I told her to ignore it.”

“Did you speak with the faculty or admin at the school?”

“No.”

“When you learned from Jordan that he’d enrolled her in public school, how did you feel?”

Liliana ran her fingers over her pants. “Feel? I can’t remember.”

“Did you feel badly that she’d been treated terribly for years?”

“At some point, I did apologize to her.”

“Did you tell her you’d make it up to her?”

“I might have. I don’t remember every single thing I say.” Liliana blew out a frustrated breath. “Do you? Does anyone? We bought her a car so she wouldn’t have to ride the bus. I took her shopping, bought her a bunch of pretty clothes. What more could I have done? She was in the house all the damn time. No friends, no parties. She wasn’t a normal teen, that’s for sure.”

How could she be? She grew up in a cult, then got shipped away to a boarding school where everyone was bullied.

Detective Cardoso stuck her head inside. “Got a second?”

Brit left the room, pulling the door shut behind her.

“One of my officers just called,” Nikki said. “A gun was found in a ladies’ shoebox, primary bedroom closet. We’ll have it checked for prints.”

“I doubt you’ll find any,” Brit replied.

“Ballistics will test it to see the last time it was fired,” Nikki said.

“Maybe she’ll start talking once she hears we found a weapon. Come in with me. She might feel the heat if there’s two of us.”

Both women entered the room, sat across from Liliana.
