Her stomach roiled, the truth hard to accept.

“Damn, that’s crazy.”

“I know,” she said. “I can’t even believe it. Was this her deranged attempt to make it up to Honor for forcing her to stay at Acorn?”

“Could be, but we’ve still got a long way to go,” he said.

“I’m hoping Cooper has time to strategize with me.”

Her heart would not stop racing.

Am I pregnant?

“Have a great training,” she said. “I’ll see you tonight, at your place.”

He stepped close. “It’s not mine anymore. It’s ours.”

She offered a little smile before taking off toward Cooper’s office. His door was open.

Knock-knock.

“Hey, Brit, c’mon in,” Cooper said. “I just heard Karen’s been withholding information.”

“Looks that way,” Brit replied. “We finally got a break in the Alphabet case. Liliana Krause’s DNA was on the lipstick found at one of the crime scenes. At the very least, we need to bring her in for questioning, but I think we’ve got enough to arrest her. What do you think?”

Fifteen minutes later, Brit rose. Cooper had this way of cutting to the chase all while calming her nerves at the same time.

He’d reached out to three judges for a search warrant and an arrest warrant. As soon as they had one, they’d move in for an arrest.

“Are you okay?”

She wanted to blurt out, “I think I’m pregnant!” Instead, she said, “Because the evidence points to Liliana Krause?”

“Yes,” he replied.

“She hasn’t been in my life for twenty years. She’s a total stranger, and possibly a murderer. My job is to get a serial killer off the street. If that’s her, then Rebel and I have done our jobs.” She paused. “And, yes, sir, I’m okay.”

“Nice work,” Cooper said.

She left ALPHA HQ.

En route to the condo, she stopped at a grocery store for two pregnancy tests. After dropping her coat and handbag on the sofa, she beelined into the bathroom.

She’d never taken a pregnancy test before, so she read the directions twice. Her fingers were shaking as she peed on the stick. Then, she set the timer and stared at that test like it had grown horns. Three short minutes felt like three hours. Her chest was so tight, she could barely breathe.

She watched in shock as the result appeared on the tiny screen, turning darker and darker by the second.

“Ohmygod, I’m pregnant.”

YOU’RE UNDER ARREST

Rebel was concerned about Brit. Was she sick again or stressing over the case?

Now wasn’t the time to get distracted, so he turned his attention to BLACK OPS training. He’d planned a series of drills, one of them being a rappel out of the Venom, a large, Marine helicopter that had been modified for ALPHA. Behind the cockpit sat the body of the bird, equipped with two rows of four seats facing each other. That freed up the center section for cargo or additional personnel.
