“Can I get her forwarding number?” Brit asked.
“I’ll have my assistant call you with that.”
“Five of your alumnae were murdered,” Brit pushed back. “Aren’t you worried that your current students are in danger?”
“Isaid, my assistant will call you back.”
The line went dead.
Brit stormed into the kitchen. After gargling with salt water, she ate a yogurt while staring out at the river below, the current moving at a rapid rate.
A shiver ran through her. That looks so cold.
Her phone rang and she hurried back into the home office. Hoping someone from the school was calling her back, she answered.
“Hello.”
“Britain, it’s Mom.”
Her stomach dropped. “What’s up, Liliana?”
Liliana sighed. “I’d love for you to attend my speaking engagement tomorrow at Hotel Dillinger.”
“I’m not sure?—”
“Addison said she’d be there. Honor too. She loved meeting you and hasn’t stopped talking about her new sisters. It starts at three.”
“Yeah, I’m not sure.”
“If you come, we can all have dinner after, as a family. Wouldn’t that be fun?”
Fun? Is she for real?
“Jumping right back into the family thing isn’t gonna work for me.”
“It’s hard to understand how brainwashing affects someone,” Liliana said. “Maybe, if you listen to my lecture, it will help clarify my poor choices.”
Brit wasn’t sure she cared.
Addison was calling her. “I’ve got another call,” Brit said. “Gotta run.”
She hung up, took her sister’s call.
“Hey,” Addison said. “How are you feeling?”
“How did you know?—”
“Rebel mentioned you might join our team, but you’re working through strep. How are you doing?”
“A little better today. How was training?”
“Great. Challenging. You would have loved target practice. We’re going to Henninger’s next time. Then, next month, we’re going to ALPHA’s off-site training facility on the Eastern shore.”
“That sounds great.”
“I wanted to see if you heard from Liliana.”
“Yeah,” Brit replied. “Are you going to her event?”
