“Tomorrow, we’ll divide up the work,” he continued. “I’ll talk to the M.E.’s if you want to chase down the crime tech reports.”

“I didn’t see anything about surveillance cameras. I’ll review the detectives’ notes from the four crime scenes.” She raked her fingers through her hair. “Will we make this our home base?”

“It’s a pain in the ass to drive out here every day.”

“I agree.”

“Tomorrow, we’ll have to gut it out at ALPHA,” he said. “Day after, I’m here in the morning with my training class. You can work here.”

“Then, what?” she asked.

“We’ll work at my condo. I’ve got a Hawk security system. You’ll be safe.”

Safe? She was putting herself in the middle of a raging inferno. Working in his home would only send her running into his arms.

Get some damn willpower.

She wanted who she wanted, and she would find a way to get this Adonis of a man out of her system.

For good.

BACK FROM THE DEAD

Britain

At nine-thirty that evening, they packed up, made their way toward the hangar. The lights were triggered by movement, so the black site creeped Brit out a little. It was in the middle of a wooded area, no external lights, no neighborhood nestled nearby.

Once they were in his SUV, he pulled out, waited for the hangar door to close. As he drove toward the dirt road, he said, “Have dinner with me.”

“I don’t think that’s a good idea.”

“Didn’t you ever have lunch with a coworker at DEA?”

She did, all the time, but she never wanted to have sex with any of them. “Once we start working at your place, we’ll be eating lunch together every day.”

“Aren’t you hungry?”

She just wanted to get home, soak in a hot tub with a glass of wine, and go to sleep.

“Raincheck,” she said. “I’m going to work on the case tonight.”

They grew silent as he drove them back to ALPHA. In the darkened vehicle, she glanced over. He met her gaze.

“What’s your gut tell you about this case?” he asked.

“I don’t know enough,” she replied.

“Not, what do you know? What does your gut tell you?”

“The victims knew the killer. No signs of struggle meant he’d been invited in. They were clothed, no signs of sexual assault, or physical assault either.”

“I agree,” Rebel said “He does know his victims, and my gut says he hates them.”

“I feel like we’re already so far behind,” she said.

“We are behind, but we got this.”
