“Did we just make one?”
She smiled. “I meant, down the road. What are your thoughts on children?”
“I have one condition about kids—that I only have them with you.”
She kissed his cheek. “I’m in no hurry. Plus, you haven’t even met my mom and dad.”
“That’s easy to fix. Invite them to dinner at my place, so I can grill.”
“I love that idea. I’ll do it in the morning.”
“If we stay up much longer, it will be the morning.” He turned out the night table light. “There is one thing I’ve missed since you came into my life.”
“Other women?”
“Hell no,” he replied. “Sleep.”
Laughing, she snuggled close.
As he drifted off to dreamland, he thought about his mom.I love you, Mom. Now, you can rest in peace.

Emerson walked into the kitchen with her stomach tied in knots. “The cinnamon rolls smell so good.” She eyed the spread on the island. “This is a lot of food.”
They sat and ate, only Emerson spent more time pushing the food around on her plate than actually eating it. She sipped some coffee, then set down her mug. “We haven’t talked about what to do with Farraday and Barca’s videoed confessions.”
“I gave their phones to Tiana Perry.”
She stared at him. “You’re gonna have to give me more than that. Does she know I know about this? What did you tell her? Am I going to get arrested?”
“Relax, babe.” He put his hand on hers to calm her. “You arenotgetting arrested. I told her I got them from friends in low places.”
“So, I don’t know?”
“No.”
“Well, I’m resigning anyway. Not today, because I’ve got too many loose ends to wrap up, but I’m going to quit the force. I killed someone. I’m a dirty cop.”
“What will you do?”
“I don’t know. All I’ve ever wanted to do is save the world from bad guys.”
“You know, I’ve got other friends inhighplaces you might want to talk to about a career opportunity.”
“Doing what?”
“Saving the world from bad guys.”
“And?”
“I’ll let them discuss the specs with you.”
She kissed his cheek. “Thanks.”
“I’ll make a call.” He tossed a nod at her plate. “But you’ve got to eat something, first.”
“You are not my mother.”
