“I do, but I got a couple of the other agents to sit them for me.”

That made no sense. “As a rookie agent, why aren’t you holding your own open houses? Isn’t that how you find new clients?”

“Randy is managing the agents who are doing the open houses for him,” Lizzie said.

Whatever the hell that means…and why can’t he answer his owndamn questions?“Who do you work for again?”

“Larke Realty,” he replied.

“Which office?”

“Damn, girl, you ask a lot of questions.” He shoved out of the chair and left the room.

Providence helped clean up, then took off. She wanted to spend the rest of the afternoon familiarizing herself with ALPHA’s extensive databases.

That evening, she texted Dakota. “Meeting my folks at the doc 8AM. Mom not well. What’s the plan for tomorrow?”

“I’ll call you in ten,” he texted. “Putting Sammy to bed.”

Not long after, her phone rang. This is work. But she couldn’t stop the excitement that lit a fire in her belly when his name popped up on her phone. “Hey,” she answered.

“Hey, yourself. What’s going on with your mom?”

“Not sure, but she’s definitely not okay.”

“I’m sorry to hear that.”

She wanted to ask him about his day. What did he and Sammy do? Had he thought about her at all? In spite of the stress with her mom and her brother’s unacceptable comments, she’d thought about him and Sammy. But that wasn’t what this call was about.

It’s business. That’s it.

“We’ve got to find a different place to work,” he said. “It’s too risky to use my black site every day.”

As his deep voice rumbled through her, she locked onto his cadence, the way he kept his voice low, like he was telling her a fantastic secret, just for her to hear.

“Agreed.”

“ALPHA HQ is too far.”

She knew exactly where this conversation was headed. Her body warmed, but she needed to pull her thoughts from the gutter. “And we can’t work at your real estate office. Hmm, maybe we should each work from home and sync up daily?” She bit back the smile.

Silence.

And then, she laughed. “Not the answer you want to hear?”

“Hell, no.”

“So, what are you proposing, Dakota?”

“We work at my house.”

“What about Sammy?”And your bedroom? And your bed? And your hard, sexy body? And the fact that we’re having a hard time keeping our hands off each other. What about all that?

“She’s at daycare twice a week and Miranda has her the other three. I’ve worked at home plenty since she was born and she knows I can’t play during the workday.”

“I was just giving you a hard time. We can give it a try. It’ll work or it won’t. If it doesn’t, we’ll figure something else out.”

“Thanks for being flexible. Good luck with your mom.”
