He wants me to read up on Dakota. She collected her items. “I take my job very seriously.”

“That’s why I hired you.”

“I’m not sure how to protect Dakota twenty-four seven if he’s going to resist me.”

“He’s like a turtle. You just have to get past that hard-shelled exterior.” Luther grabbed a large duffle bag and walked her to the lobby. “I’m sure you’ll figure something out.” He handed her the bag.

“What’s this?”

“Your Kevlar vest. It does you no good in this bag. Wear it.”

As she drove east toward the city, she had no idea how she would protect her stunningly handsome partner who was also a royal pain in the ass.

Things Are Getting Personal

At twelve thirty, Providence rode the elevator to the top floor of the high-rise building that bore the name LUCK. Normally in control of her emotions, butterflies fluttered in her stomach. On the one hand, she couldn’t wait to see Dakota. On the other, yesterday hadnotgone well…at all. The only way this situation would work is if they put aside their anger and worked together.

I can do this.

The elevator doors slid open. She threw her shoulders back and stepped into the upscale offices of Goode-Luck Real Estate.

“Good morning,” said the smartly dressed woman at reception. “Nope, let’s try that again. Goodafternoon. Welcome to Goode-Luck. How can I help you?”

“I’m here to see Dakota.”

“Are you Ms. Reynolds?”

“I am.”

“He’s in a meeting. Can I get you a beverage?”

“I’m fine, thanks.”

The woman walked around the reception counter. “Please,” she said, gesturing to the nearby waiting area. “If you change your mind, the kitchen is right around the corner.”

“Thanks.”

“Are you shopping for a new home?”

“No.”

“Are you listing yours?”

Providence shook her head.

The woman stalled for a second, appearing confused. Then, smiling, she said, “Dakota will be out shortly.”

Too keyed up to sit, Providence walked to the window and admired the skyline. The day was clear, the sky a vibrant blue, and the spectacular view went on for miles and miles.

She felt him standing behind her and a burst of energy skirted through her. The air crackled and her body tingled in anticipation.

“Hello, Providence.” His voice was low, yesterday’s anger replaced with his signature rumble that made her pulse soar.

She turned and her heart fluttered. Dakota Luck on his home turf was breathtaking. His confident smile sent endorphins flying through her. Then, she realized his achingly beautiful expression was all part of his act. And her silly, stupid little heart stopped beating so hard in her chest.

This was his billion-dollar company, and he carried himself like the CEO that he was. He didn’t want his employees to detect anything was out of the ordinary. Already a primary suspect in a murder investigation, he didn’t need to call attention to the fact that the woman standing inches away from him was someone he detested—and someone he was now forced to work with.
