“Wow, you have one special child.” As Providence stood, she swiped a tear.

Dakota pulled her in for a hug. “You are so good to her.”

Providence cleared her throat. “She’s easy to adore.”

“Detective Beeker called me in for questioning,” Dakota said. “Warren’s meeting me there.” Dakota texted the detective to let him know he could expect him and his attorney.

“I’m one step ahead of you,” Providence said. “I heard from Beeker while you were gone and Warren is meeting me at the station, as well.”

“They’re going to pit us against each other.”

“Their strategy will fail. I’m going to change into a suit.” Providence left his office.

Dakota found Miranda and Sammy in the kitchen. “Providence and I have to go out for a few hours.” He slid his gaze to Miranda. “Can I have a word?”

Miranda followed him into the foyer.

“We’re headed to the police station for questioning.”

“I’m sorry they’re putting you both through this, Dakota.”

“If they arrest me and you don’t want to take care of Sammy—”

Miranda held up her hand. “Don’t even go there. I’ve got this. And you arenotgoing to jail.” With that, she offered a sweet smile as Sammy skipped into the room.

Dakota picked her up and kissed her cheek. If he got arrested for the murder of Matt and was convicted, karma would be showing him who’s really boss. The thought of losing his daughter made his head hurt.

Providence caught his eye as she walked toward them. She’d put on a little makeup and changed into a black pants suit and crisp white shirt. Besides looking hot as hell, she looked more prosecutor than suspect.

“You look pretty,” Sammy exclaimed.

Her smile made Dakota’s pulse pick up speed.

Providence stroked the child’s hair. “Thank you, Sammy.”

He kissed his daughter and set her down. As she walked away, his guts roiled. Losing her would kill him.

Thirty minutes later, Dakota and Providence were waiting at the police station when Warren arrived.

“How are you guys holding up?” Warren asked.

“Never better,” Dakota replied, his tone filled with sarcasm.

Detective Beeker appeared. “Mr. Luck, Ms. Reynolds. I’m Aaron Beeker.”

Dakota introduced their attorney.

“Mr. Luck, why don’t you and I chat first,” Beeker said. “Come on back.”

Dakota held eye contact with Providence before he and Warren followed the detective into an interrogation room.

A female officer walked in, introduced herself, and eased down beside Beeker.

“Mr. Luck, you’re a well-respected businessman in the community and have been for fifteen years,” Beeker began.

That wasn’t a question, so Dakota offered nothing. Not even a fucking nod.

“We’re gonna get right to the point. The rope used to bind Mr. Hastings came from The Dungeon. You’re one of the owners, correct?”
