“You’re about to spend eternity with the devil himself,” Sin said.

“You get the last word, Hill,” Stryker said.

“I loved every minute of it.”

Uncontrollable rage billowed from Dakota. He popped him between the eyes. Hill dropped to the floor with a thud. Stryker shot him in the heart, twice.

“Confirm the son of a bitch isn’t breathing,” Dakota murmured before taking off down the hallway.

He opened the bedroom door. Both women were huddled together in the closet. Dakota knelt. “He’s dead.”

The one who’d been held prisoner started sobbing. “Oh, dear Lord. Thank you. Thank you.”

“How long have you been held here?”

“Months. He kidnapped me in New Hampshire. He called me his good luck charm. I hope he rots in hell.”

“Are there cameras in the house?”

“I don’t know,” she replied. “He might have some on the outside. He was paranoid the police were coming back.”

“I’m calling them now, then we’re out. They’ll want information on us. Tell them nothing.”

“Okay,” said the second woman.

“What’s important is that you’re both survivors,” Dakota said. “Make it a good life.”

“Thank you,” said the second woman.

Dakota strode down the hallway. Stryker and Sin waited in the mudroom.

“Dead?” Dakota murmured.

“Confirmed,” Sin replied.

“Let’s get the hell out of here.” Once outside, Dakota called the police.

“What’s your emergency?” asked the operator.

“Jay Hill, known as the Midnight Raper, is dead.” Dakota gave her the address on Wayne Street. “There are two women being held captive in the back bedroom. There are multiple corpses in the basement, might be more buried behind the garage.”

“Sir, we’ll send someone right out there. What is your name?”

Dakota hung up, then called the FBI hotline and told them the same thing.

As they made their way back to the safe house, Dakota snapped the burner in two. Despite the risk of getting caught, he did not regret what he had done.

He had stopped a monster.

Sirens pierced the quiet night as they entered the house on Bradley Street. Over the next few hours, they took turns dozing, but Dakota couldn’t sleep. They left before dawn, riding in a taxi to the airport.

“You guys listen to the news this morning?” asked the driver.

“No,” Dakota replied.

“Well, the Midnight Raper was killed. About time someone offed that SOB. Gals around here have been scared to death for months. Turns out, he had two stashed in his house.” The guy shuddered. “I’ve got two daughters myself. Boy, am I glad he’s gone.”

“Did the FBI get him?” Sin asked.
