“I must be crazy,” Maverick said after breakfast. “We need his DNA,” Carly replied. “This seems like the surest way to get it.”

“I’m checking in with Sinclair first.” Maverick dialed while Carly cleared the table.

Sinclair answered. “Hey.”

“Hey, bro. We got what we needed from Greta’s, so we won’t be returning.”

“I’ll tell her. You got enough to bury the SOB?”

“Let’s hope so. How are you doing?”

“I’ve got some shit going down. Dakota’s calling me. Gotta go.” The line went dead.

“Hmm,” Maverick said.

“What?” Carly asked.

He slid his gaze to her. “He and Dakota are up to something.”

“That’s nothing new.”

“True,” he said. “Wish me luck. I’m calling Internado.”

Leaning down, Carly kissed him. “You’ve got this.”

“That’s cuz I’ve got you, babe.” He flashed her a smile before dialing the senator’s private number.

“Hello?” Internado answered.

“It’s Maverick.”

“What can I do for you?” The senator’s brusque tone came as no surprise.

“We should talk. How’s Rudy’s, say, noon today?”

“Why?”

“I’m ready to help you with your campaign.” Bile rose in Maverick’s throat.

“Good. I’ll meet you there at four.” The line went dead.

Carly checked the tracker. Kathy Internado had returned home. George Internado’s car was still at the dealership. “Let’s hope he doesn’t ask you to drive him to pick up his car.”

“I’m getting his damn DNA one way or another.”

Maverick drove them to his office, determined to have the day go off without a hitch. I need some damn normal.

Later that afternoon, as Carly fitted Maverick with a wire, Gunner entered his office. “What trouble are you two getting into?”

“I’m meeting with Internado,” Maverick said.

Crossing his arms, Gunner leaned against the wall. “This can’t be good.”

“No alternative.” Maverick slipped on his shirt.
