“You, Sinclair Develin, are my hero.”
“Don’t you mean anti-hero?”
“I like that even better,” she replied with a smile.

A Blessing
After Charlene was placed in the police cruiser, Sin pulled Evangeline aside. “How are you doing?”
“Good, relieved, furious.” She paused. “Grateful.”
“Me, too, babe. I’m heading back to check on Jacoby.” He glanced around at the number of police and FBI agents that had arrived. “Do you want me to send Anton to pick you up later?”
“I’ll grab a ride. If I run into a snag, I’ll let you know.” Pausing, she clasped his hands. “Thank you.” Then, she shot him a little smile. “Those two words are never enough where you’re concerned. You are pretty damn phenomenal, you know that?”
He grinned. “I do.”
“So cocky.” Then, she whispered in his ear. “Don’t ever change. I love that about you.” She squeezed his hands and let them go. “I’ll see you at home.”
He loved hearing her say that. “Sounds like a plan.”
She trotted up the steps and vanished into the lobby.
First stop: The black site. Sin jumped into the SUV and took off.
Jacoby was resting comfortably. As Sin eased into the chair beside the bed, exhaustion crept in behind his eyes and he fought the urge to close them. “How are you feeling?”
“Like I’ve been shot.”
“I’m sorry this happened to you.”
“I’m damn glad you three got to me in time.”
“In all the years we’ve worked together, we’ve never been shot. Past couple of months, we’ve both been shot.Twice.”
“I’ll wear my badge of honor with pride.”
“You and me both. Where’s Beverly?”
“Anton took her home.”
Dakota walked into the room. “What’d I miss?”
“Charlene Caraway is Uncle Charlie,” Sin replied. “TherealUncle Charlie.”
“Unbelievable,” Jacoby said.
“What the hell?” Dakota added. “So, she kidnapped her own stepdaughter and grandson?”
“Crazy, huh?” Sin replied. “I’m pretty sure she was going to make Hannah conveniently disappear after she sold the baby.”
“How long had she been running The Institute?” Dakota asked.
“I’m guessing decades, but the truth will come out. Evangeline’s good at her job.” Sin regarded Jacoby. “How long are you staying here?”
“The doc returns tomorrow to check on me.”
