I still don’t know how it happened. How I got so damn lucky.
June starts to slip out the door, but I grab her wrist, tugging her into me.
Her eyes widen, and she glances toward the hallway. The look reminds me of a spooked baby deer.An adorable baby deer, but a baby deer, nonetheless.
“What is it?”she whispers.
“You.”
Her brows dip.
“You are the best thing to ever happen to me.”
I’m still getting used to this part, too.The genuine part. The one who doesn’t hide behind sarcasm and assholery.Don’t worry. My filter is still very much lacking, but my wit is mingled in with moments like this.Moments where I say what I feel, even if it makes me sound like a sap, because I know it won’t hurt me.She won’t hurt me.Not now, not ever.
Understanding gleams back at me as June places her free hand on my chest.“I love you, too, but maybe don’t give me a heart attack next time.”She peeks over her shoulder once more.“I thought my dad was still outside or something.”
That’s what she’s worried about?
I bite back my amusement and sway us from side to side.“He already knows we’re in here,” I remind her.
“I know, but…”
“And he already knows we have sex?—”
“Ford!”She smacks my chest.
Ignoring her protest, I press on.“And he already knows I love his daughter.”
Warmth shines in her pretty gaze, replacing her embarrassment.“Ford,” she repeats. This time, it’s laced with a shyness reminding me of the first time we met. When she was off limits. When she was too good to be true. When she was out of my league and just out of reach. The memory makes my chest ache. What would it be like?To not know this feeling? To have passed on reaching out and claiming her?The possibility hits its mark.
My grasp on her tightens.“And he already knows that, one day, I’m gonna marry her,” I murmur.
Her teeth dig into the inside of her bottom lip.“You sound pretty sure of yourself.”
“Rare, I know,” I quip.
With a laugh, she rises onto her tiptoes and kisses me.Right.On.The mouth. My surprise only lasts a beat before I wrap my arms around her and deepen the kiss, unbrushed teeth and all.
Another laugh slips out of her, and she smacks my chest.“There he is.I give you an inch, you take a mile.”
Smiling against her lips, I murmur, “Always.”
HIJACKED EPILOGUE
LEXIE
“Hurry up, I don’t have all day,” my brother orders as he unlocks the door to our house.
Myhouse.
Ethan’s been staying with me for the last little while, and I’m oh so ready to rescind the invitation.Don’t get me wrong, I won’t.But oh boy, do I want to.
Walking into the tiny home, I toss my purse onto the small kitchen counter, and reply, “It’s okay, you don’t need to give me a ride tonight.”
His nostrils flare and he pulls his cell away from his ear. He’s been talking to one of his buddies for the last fifteen minutes.“Gotta talk with Gus anyway,” he tells me.
Of course, he does.
