“Wow,” she said. “You just lied to me.”

I dropped my head. “I’m sorry. I’m not used to sharing everything.”

“Can I just tell you something?” she asked, scooting off the bed. She paced the floor. “We moved very fast with this. I mean, one day we were smoking an innocent joint together, and the next minute you had your mouth on mine and your hand in my pants.”

“Demi, I—”

“No,” she rushed on. “Let me finish. Maybe that was our mistake. Instead of taking it slow, taking the time to transition into this relationship, we forged ahead without a thought to how this change would affect us.” Her shoulders fell. “Now, you’re lying to me. And you never have before.”

“It wasn’t like that, Demi.”

“It doesn’t matter. I can’t do this if you can’t continue being the Duke that I’ve always known. If something is bothering you, either tell me or say you don’t want to talk about it right now. Whatever you do, don’t lie. And don’t tell me it’s nothing when I can clearly see that there is something wrong.”

“Okay.” I approached her. “I fucked up. X told me to tell you and I didn’t.”

“You told X before you told me?”

I blinked. “Demi.”

“Wow. You’re just fucking up all over the place.”

Dropping my head, I murmured, “I’m sorry.” I pulled her to me and tilted my head to meet her glare. “I was wrong.”

“As hell.”

“I didn’t know how to tell you.”

“Has that ever stopped you before?” she shot back.

I chuckled. “I guess not.”

“Seriously, what the fuck happened that made you hop on a plane like a thief in the night?”

“It’s big.”

“Do you love me?” she asked.

Frowning, I said, “Of course, I do.”

“Do you believe that I love you?”

I nodded.

“If I told you I had sex with my college English professor would you love me any less?”

“Did you?”

“No.” She smacked me again. “You’re missing the point. If it’s something from your past, it doesn’t matter to me. I still love you.”

I led her to the bed, and sat down, pulling her on my lap because I needed her to be close to me. “When I found out Carolyn died, I went to meet Sasha.”

“That part is the most confusing to me. I don’t even want to know why Sasha knew that Carolyn died. But okay.”

“She told me something that Carolyn had kept from me.”

“What is it?”

“I have a son.”
