My father once told me that once he recognized how Ma made him want to be a better version of himself, he knew he had to lock that down. And he’d done just that. They’d recently celebrated forty years of marriage and still managed to make each other their top priority. As I watched Demi chatting with my sisters, smiling, laughing, I realized that she’d always been a priority for me. She’d been someone who’d offered understanding, unwavering support, and unconditional love. I loved her.I’m in love with her. The thought didn’t make me cringe or want to fuck everything up. On the contrary, I felt stronger, solid in that knowledge.I just have to tell her.
“It’s different, huh?” Dex handed me a glass of champagne. “Watching the woman you love from across the room, knowing that she wants you too.”
I glanced at him. “Very different.”
“Is this you admitting that you’re in love with her?”
“You already know.”
Dallas joined us, wrapping her arms around us both. “I’m super emotional today,” she confessed. “But I’m so proud of you, Dex.”
Dex kissed her cheek. “Thanks, sis.”
Dallas looked at me out of the corner of her eye. “She’s beautiful, huh?”
I raked my gaze over Demi. “Very.”
“You better not hurt her,” she warned.
“I couldn’t,” I said.
She grinned. “I know. Love you.”
I kissed her other cheek. “Love you too.”
The photographer snapped a pic of the moment. “Oh no.” Dallas shook her head. “That’s not my good side.”
“Shut up, DD,” Dex said, “and smile.”
On cue, Dallas smiled as the photographer snapped a picture of the three of us. The Triples. Off to the side, my mother beamed. “My babies.” She ran to us and posed.Snap. “Love you!” She blew kisses and zoomed off.
The rest of the pictures took forever because… Yeah, we were foolin’ around. We were on time for the reception, though, which made the wedding planner, Taylar Cross, happy. After dinner, after the toasts, after the cake cutting, the party got started.
My sisters dragged Demi out to the floor to dance, and I smiled as Skye approached me at my table. “Finally.” She sat in Demi’s chair. “I’ve been waiting to talk to you.”
“Why aren’t you dancing?” I asked.
“I don’t want to dance,” she said with a shrug.
“What’s up, Skye?” I draped an arm around her. “You’ve been watching me all night.”
“Because I haven’t seen you in so long.”
“You just saw me a couple of weeks ago.”
“Okay, I’m nosy.”
“I’m just glad you’re admitting it.”
Skye bobbed her head to the music. “Demi, huh?”
“Yeah,” I confirmed. “You have thoughts?”
“Some.”
“Are you here to confess your undying love to me now that you know I’m with someone else that I actually care about?”
Skye cracked up, elbowing me softly. “I’m not Julia Roberts in this story,” she said, referring to one of her favorite movies,My Best Friend’s Wedding. “It’s… You’re different.”
