“Because it’s over.”
“What do you mean?” Kelvin inched toward me.
Dex held his hand up. “I don’t think so.”
Kelvin backed up like the little punk he was. “Charlye, can we talk? In private.”
“Nothing to talk about. I didn’t stutter,” I said, keeping my voice even. “We’re done.” Without another word, I turned on my heels and walked away.
“Charlye, wait.” Kelvin’s voice took on another tone, a desperate one. “Charlye?”
But I kept going. Eventually, I ducked around a corner and leaned against the wall. A surge of relief washed over me as I took several deep breaths to calm my rapidly beating heart. I’d never done that before, but it felt so damn good to be the one walking away instead of the one being left.
Seconds later, Dex rounded the corner. “Come on.”
“What?”
“Dance with me.”
I followed him without hesitation to the dance floor.
“Close your mouth,” he commanded.
I hadn’t realized that I was still gaping at him and did as I was told. “Oh.”
Then he pulled me close to him and leaned down. “You did good,” he murmured against my ear. “But you’re not done. He’s still here.”
I tensed.
“Don’t look over there,” Dex instructed. “He’ll leave. Two minutes.” He swung me around so that my back was to the door.
As we swayed to PJ Morton, I allowed myself to sink into him, to let him hold me. “Thank you, Dex”
He lifted my chin. “You deserve better. But you have to believe that. If you don’t, then you’ll always find yourself with a Kelvin or a Logan.”
“I know,” I said.
He raised a challenging brow. “Do you? That means, no matter what he does to try to get you to take him back, you can’t go back.”
“I know,” I repeated. “I’m done.”
“Charlye?” He brushed his thumb over my bottom lip. He was so close that I could smell the bourbon on his breath, so close that it felt like a kiss. So close that Iwantedhim to kiss me.
“You’ve been drinking?” I breathed.
He chuckled and the sound went straight to my pussy. “A little. But not enough to make me sleepy.”
“Good.” I giggled. “Because I’m going to need you to stay awake.”
“I got you.” He pulled me even closer. I could feel his heartbeat against my own. “He’s gone.”
But I didn’t care about Kelvin at that point. The only thing I cared about was the man holding me, the man making everything better, the man making me feel safe. And I didn’t want to let go of that feeling. Not yet.
