His eyes locked on mine as he dried his hands. “No need.”
Tucking a strand of hair behind my ear, I said, “Thanks for your help, Mr. Prescott.”
“Cooper,” he insisted. “And you’re welcome, Angel.”
Lawd… The way my name rolled off his tongue seemed to increase the temperature in the room—and my body.I need to get myself together. I wasn’t a corny teenager or even a desperate woman. Why is this man pushing all my buttons? “Who said you could call me by my first name?” I asked, attempting to take back some of my control.
He laughed. “Ah, you got me. I guess you didn’t give me permission.”
Cracking up, I waved him off. “I’m just playin’. Thanks for everything. And I definitely want to talk about this house thing when things die down.”
“Sounds like a plan.” He pulled out a business card and handed it to me. “Call my cell.”
I studied the card. Another checkmark in the ‘I’m intrigued’ column for Cooper. I’d always liked men who worked with their hands. “You work in construction?”
“I do.”
Arching a brow, I asked, “In Detroit?”
“Yes, ma’am.” He flashed a dimpled smile. “In the D.”
Cutie Prescott was a charming muthafucka. And I caught that emphasis onthe D. It made me think about anotherD. Under his pants.
“Angel, get your shit together.”
“Excuse me?”
Shit, I said that out loud. “Nothing,” I lied, grabbing Mehki’s hand and starting toward the front door. “I’ll give you a call soon.”
He brushed by me, leaving me with the consolation prize of another whiff of his cologne. “Good. I’ll be in town for another week or so.”
“Alright.”
He walked outside of the house and turned back to me. Dropping his gaze to Mehki, he said, “I saw you let that spider go when I got here.”
“I didn’t want Mommie to kill it,” Mehki said.
“I used to collect them.”
My son’s eyes lit up. “Really? I want a Chilean Rose tarantula, but Mommie said no.”
Cooper looked at me. “Do it. They’re fun pets.”
I grimaced. “Not in this life. He can visit them in a museum or a zoo or something.”
“I’ll work on her,” Cooper told Mehki with a wink.
“Thank you!” Mehki grinned. “Can you come back tomorrow?”
Laughing, Cooper said, “Not tomorrow. But I’ll see you again.” He held up a hand and Mehki slapped him a high five. “Bye, Angel Crawford.”
My stomach turned. “Bye, Cooper Prescott.”
Then, he was gone. And I was… still intrigued.Charming muthafucka.
