I shot her a sidelong glance. “Youthinkyou have your answer.”

Ryleigh moved closer. “It’s pretty clear to me. You’re smitten.”

I peered down at Ryleigh. “When did you turn into Ava?”

She giggled, shoving me playfully. “Now, you know better. I love my friend, but I’m definitely not her.”

“I know.”

“Seriously, though. She’s beautiful.” She poked me in my shoulder. “You better not fuck this up.”

It was my turn to laugh now. “Go home, Ry.”

Angel and Mama Lil made their way back over a few minutes later. After a long awkward silence, Mama Lil announced, “I’m tired, Ry. Let’s go.”

“Thanks again, Mama Lil,” Angel said.

The older woman waved her hand towel. “Chile, that’s what we’re here for.”

Ryleigh slid her coat on. “Alright. Mama Lil, let’s go.” She gave me a hug and whispered, “Remember what I said, sir. No fuck ups allowed.”

After they exchanged goodbyes with Angel, they left.

“She’s nice.”

“We grew up together,” I explained. “She’s one of Ava’s best friends.”

Angel nodded. “And who is she to you?”
