Andrew had spotted the puzzle on the table and got to work. How the hell was I supposed to know he was a puzzle fanatic? It wasn’t something they’d ever talked about. Ever. But she learned today. And her horny body was paying the price for that lesson. While his singular focus was endearing, it was also annoying. Becauseshewas ready to go to bed, to make love to him, to fall asleep in his arms.
“I also thought it was going to be an ongoing project,” she continued, raising her brow when he met her gaze again. “For me.”
Sighing, he stood and pulled her to him. He brushed his mouth over hers. “I get the hint.”
“Good.”
He wrapped his arms around her and walked her backward toward the bed. “You have all of my attention now.”
“Lovely.” She pushed the straps of her gown off and let it fall to the floor. “Now, get naked and do me.”
Early the next morning—after he’d made it up to hertwotimes—she emerged from the shower to find him already dressed.
“I hate that you have to leave so early,” she told him.
Since they were lying low, he’d always arrived late and left before the sun came up. He also parked in her garage in case someone was lurking outside her house.
Andrew tugged her to him and traced her lips, before placing a sweet kiss on her mouth. “I know. But it won’t be forever.”
He’d told her the same thing back in South Haven. But there was no telling when they’d be able to stop the pretense and live their lives. Skye had scheduled so many interviews with trade magazines and talk shows. She’d even secured an invitation toThe Opal Winfield Show, all in an attempt to spin the narrative.
Paige wrapped her arms around his waist and snuggled into him. “I’ll be glad when it’s over.” Although she knew Opal, she still hated the idea of going on a show toclearher name when she’d done nothing wrong—in her marriage or with Andrew. “I still don’t get why I have to clear my name for anything.”
“It’s not clearing your name. You didn’t commit a crime.”
She glanced up at him. “Exactly.”
“So let’s not call it that anymore. You’re just telling your story.”
The big interview was next month. Until then, she’d do everything that Skye had requested, including pretending Andrew was nothing more than her agent. In public.
“Did you get the invite to Jax’s retirement party?” she asked.
Andrew nodded. “I did. It’s finally sinking in that it’s real.”
“Mom is distraught.” Jax Starks had been her mother’s agent for over thirty years. Paige understood why her mother was flipping out at the prospect of working with another agent, because she’d probably feel the same way if Andrew left the business.
“I’m sure X will do just as well with her career.”
She scrunched her nose. “I actually think she’s going to ask you to represent her.”
Frowning, he asked, “Why?”
Paige shrugged. “She likes you. And it has nothing to do with me.”
“That would be weird, don’t you think?”
“Yes, that’s why you have to turn her down and let X do it. Me and my mother can’t have the same agent. It just won’t work.”
Andrew agreed with her. “Either way, we don’t know what she’s going to do.” He grabbed her hand and pulled her toward the door. Bending down, he put on those ugly work shoes he always wore.
When he looked up at her, he frowned, standing up. “What’s wrong?”
I really have to control my facial expressions around him. “What are you talking about?”
Andrew tapped her nose. “Your nose is all scrunched up right now. Are you okay?”
Letting out an exaggerated sigh, she warred with herself over whether the truth would really set her free. But since they’d promised to be honest, she knew she had to go with the truth. “I sort of have a confession to make.”
