A pause.

Then I answer.

“The proposed gym project, Jonas must have told his mob friends they’d be getting this contract, but he let his ego get in the way,” I say and the wheels are turning now.

“So, if he’s supposed to get it for them, it reasons they’re pissed he’s delaying the project, right?” Ego asks.

And it’s a really good question.

I go still.

“Okay, listen up. You are supposed to be on leave, Kai. So, none of this conversation is on the record for Sigma. Anything you may or may not do with the information learned here is entirely a result of your own reasoning and actions. Got it?”

“Got it.”

And I do.

I completely understand what he’s saying.

Next, I hear a click. It’s Kane leaving the conference call.

Twenty-One

Kai

“I’m here for you, brother,” Ego says, “Just say when and where.”

“I’ll get back to you,” I grumble.

Kane’s gone.

It’s just me and Ego on the line and I don’t bother filling the silence while I gather my thoughts.

He waits.

And I stare out my apartment window.

Thinking.

Adding pieces together.

The permits.

The contractors who won the bid on the project.

Then the Valentine’s Day dance happened, and now, it’s donors suddenly disappearing.

Permit revoked.

Requests for info being delayed. Ignored, even.

And it all leads back to Jonas.

Fucking Jonas.

“Can we prove he’s behind the delays?”

“Not yet,” Ego says. “But we keep working on it, and we’ll have something solid. Not everyone is smart enough to permanently wipe their texts or emails.”
