Well, that needs to change.
SETH
Skye’s so responsive, just as I’ve always dreamed of. Her release rippling under my mouth is enough to have me close to coming myself. And that’s so not happening.
Nope, when I detonate I want to be buried up to the hilt in her wet and welcoming depths. I’m not hurrying though. I want to savor this.
As I slide back up her body, I pause to suck on her nipples. Taking them into my mouth, I tug on them gently, and am rewarded when she arches her back. It’s as though she can’t get close enough to me, and it’s a sentiment I share.
Hot damn, I’ll be lucky to last at this rate.
I’ve reclaimed her lips when the lamp flashes bright a couple of times. It’s not until there’s a rumble of thunder that I realize my mistake. That wasn’t the lamp. Damn it to hell, the storm wasn’t supposed to arrive until lunchtime tomorrow, at the earliest.
I need to get out of here, and fast.
Struggling to my feet, I search frantically for my keys, eventually spotting them on a small table in the entrance way. I make short work of crossing the room and am relieved when my hand closes over them. A second later and I open the front door. “Ah, I’m sorry… Ah, I can’t…” Any further words fail me.
My sudden departure obviously takes Skye by surprise. The last thing I see before I close the front door is the poor woman still lying naked on the sofa, her face a mask of shock.
Even so, it wouldn’t be as big a shock for her as watching me cowering in the corner of the room, my hands stuffed over my ears.
I don’t slow until I’m safely in the cab of my truck, only then realizing that I don’t even have a shirt on. There’s not a chance I’m going back for it. Instead, I hurry to start the engine, the noise it makes enough to drown out the thunder.
I just need to get home. I repeat this over and over, focusing on this rather than the anxiety attack that’s threatening to overwhelm me. I’ve never disassociated while behind the wheel, and I sure as hell don’t want to start now.
Screw it, that storm couldn’t have arrived at a worse moment.
What must Skye think of me now?
I know what I’d be thinking if I was her, and it wouldn’t be pretty. I never imagined I’d have a chance with someone like her, and after tonight, I doubt I ever will.
There’ll be no coming back from abandoning her like I had. I’d wanted to stay, snuggling up to her, waking to find her ready to carry on from where we’d left off. Slow morning sex is a beautiful thing.
Then I think about what would have happened if we’d been in the throes of passion when that lightning and thunder struck.
And how would Skye have taken it when I was lost to memories of that land mine taking us out? Surely there’s no bigger turn off than a damaged man? We’re meant to be the strong ones.
Even worse, is while I’m in that state, the real world ceases to exist. What if I hurt her because I mistook her for the enemy?
It’s something that keeps circling until I’m flying up the outside stairs to my apartment over the garage after abandoning my truck out front. I’ve just made it inside when there’s another clap of thunder and my world comes crashing down around me.
Yet again, I’m back on that dusty road in the desert.
