“I’m here.”

“Is there something you want to say?”

“A few people have asked if I think this was directed at you.”

Sam’s heart sank. “If it was for me, why’d they bomb the lobby and not the pit?”

“Because they can’t get to the pit. Anyone can walk into the lobby. That’s as close as they could get.”

“So you also think it was aimed at me?”

“I don’t know what to think.”

“Should I not come back?”

“Let’s steer clear of HQ until we know more about what happened today.”

“Okay… What aren’t you saying?”

“Tensions are running high here.”

“Is there any word on the chief?”

“He has a concussion and a broken wrist and is already asking when he can come back to work.”

“That’s a relief. I’d like to run over to GW to see him and Marti. Want to meet me there?”

“Will do. See you there.”

Sam slapped her phone closed. “Let’s go to GW.”

Chapter Nineteen

As they approached the hospital on 23rd Street Northwest, Sam was surprised to find a huge media presence. “What’re they doing here?” she asked Freddie after they stopped to pick him up on the way in. He’d parked about two blocks from the packed parking area.

“Probably waiting for you,” Freddie said. “They know you’re close to the chief.”

“What do they think they’ll get from me?”

“Video of you going in to check on your friend and colleague who was injured in a bombing at your workplace.”

“Huh.”

“Why is that not obvious to you?” he asked, sounding amused.

“I still don’t get why people care so much about me.”

“Do I need to explain that to you, too?”

“Don’t get sassy with me, young Freddie.”

“Well… You make it too easy. In case you need reminding, the whole world is interested in you, your husband, your kids and your dog.”

“The dog is the most popular of us all.”

“Because she’s too cute for words, and Scotty’s commentary about her is brilliant. Remind me to show you their account when we’re not in the midst of chaos.”

“When will that be? Can you give me a time frame so I can look forward to it?”
