“Really?”
“Yes, really. I have the space, and she needs somewhere to be. I could help her get her life started.”
“You should talk to Terry about this before you commit to anything.” Lindsey’s fiancé, Terry O’Connor, was Nick’s chief of staff.
Lindsey tightened the colorful scrunchie that held her ponytail in place. “He’d tell me to do whatever I think is right.”
“Having her with you wouldn’t affect the case, because Morganthau did the autopsy, and we’d call him to testify.”
“True.
“And the only people who’d want her dead would be locked up, so it wouldn’t be dangerous for you to have her in your home.”
“Also true.”
“Take an hour, Linds. Make sure it still feels right to you.”
“I don’t need an hour. I want to help her.”
Sam stood to hug her friend. “Thank you. I’ll bring her to meet you shortly. In the meantime, you might want to give your fiancé a call.”
Lindsey laughed. “Did you get a feeling when you met the twins that they were meant for you?”
“Instantly.”
“I feel the same way about Amara, and I haven’t even met her.”
“She just got very, very lucky. Someday she’ll see that. I’ll be back.”
“I’ll be here.”
Sam was overwhelmed with gratitude for Lindsey and couldn’t wait to tell Amara the news, but before she told Amara, she needed to clear the arrangement with Captain Malone and Hope Miller. God forbid they did anything to endanger the prosecution of Amara’s mother and stepfather.
Malone was coming into the pit from the other side as Sam arrived. She gestured to her office.
“I’ve got your arrest warrants,” he said.
“Excellent. Lindsey has offered to take in Amara for as long as she needs a place to live. Morganthau did the autopsy, so she’d have no role in testifying. Are you okay with her stepping up for Amara?”
“That’s really nice of her. Let me just check with Hope to be sure she’s cool with it.”
“Let me know.”
“Will do.”
Sam followed him to the door. “Freddie!”
He popped up from his cubicle. “You howled, Lieutenant?”
Sam texted Vernon to let him know they were on their way out. “Hold off on the safe house for the moment. We might have another plan.”
“Okay.”
“Let’s go pick up the mother.”
“Did you call for backup?”
“I was going to have you do that on the way.”
