"Make love to me," I whispered. "Please. I need to feel safe again. I need to feel you."

The request was calculated. Nathan always responded to my vulnerability with a particular kind of intensity—a desperate claiming that reinforced his role as my protector. If I could give him that, if I could make him believe I was still his broken doll, I could buy myself the time I needed to gather more intelligence.

He didn't hesitate. His mouth found mine with a hunger that bordered on violence, and I matched it with a desperation that was half performance and half the genuine need for physical release. Six days of Gabriel's careful touch had reminded me what real control felt like; now I needed to remember what it felt like to pretend.

"Here," I gasped against his mouth. "Right here. I can't wait—"

He pushed me against the entryway wall, his hands gripping my hips hard enough to bruise. I wrapped my legs around him and let him hold me there, my back pressed against the cold plaster, my fingers working his belt with frantic urgency.

"Hurry," I breathed. "I need you inside me. I need to feel you—"

He didn't make me wait. He freed himself from his pants and pushed inside me with a single hard thrust, and I cried out—not from pain, but from the sudden fullness, the familiar stretch, the way my body responded to himdespite everything I knew. My conditioning ran deep, and Nathan knew exactly which buttons to push. He'd been pushing them for months.

"Look at me," he commanded, and I did. His eyes were dark with want, his jaw tight with the effort of control. "You're mine. No matter what Gabriel tries, no matter what threats he makes—you're mine."

"Yours," I agreed, and the word was a knife I was learning to wield.

He fucked me against the wall with a ferocity that would have thrilled me a month ago. Now I catalogued every sensation with clinical detachment—the rhythm of his thrusts, the pressure of his grip, the way his breath caught when I clenched around him. I was studying him the way I had learned to study targets, learning his patterns and his weaknesses and the small tells that would betray him when the time came.

My hands were clasped behind my back—an echo of submission, the posture Gabriel had trained into me and Nathan had learned to exploit. But the submission was a lie. I was the one in control now. I was the one gathering intelligence. I was the one who would decide when and how this ended.

"Harder," I demanded, and he complied. "Don't stop—please don't stop—"

The orgasm built with mechanical precision, my body responding to the familiarstimuli even as my mind remained cold and distant. When I came, it was with a cry that sounded like surrender but felt like victory. Nathan followed moments later, his release a shuddering groan against my shoulder.

Afterward, he carried me to the bedroom—gentle now, solicitous, the caring partner who'd saved me from myself. He drew a bath and added the lavender salts I liked, and he held me in the warm water with a tenderness that would have moved me if I'd still been capable of being moved.

"Tell me more about the Volkov connection," he said, his voice casual. "What exactly did you see in those documents?"

I closed my eyes and let myself sink deeper into the bath, my head resting against his chest. "Names. Dates. Shipping manifests. Gabriel's been in contact with someone named Dimitri—one of the Volkov brothers, I think. They're planning to move product through the old routes. Institute-trained product."

"The conditioning protocols?"

"I think so." I let my voice go soft, sleepy. "The documents mentioned something called the Reclamation Project. I didn't understand all of it, but it sounded like he wants to rebuild the conditioning program. Find new subjects. Start over."

Nathan's arms tightened around me. "That's not going to happen."

"I know." I turned in his arms, pressing a kiss to his jaw. "You'll stop him. You always protect me."

"Always." The word was a promise. A lie. A chain he didn't realize I was already breaking.

Later, after he'd fallen asleep, I slipped out of bed and retrieved the burner phone from its hiding place in my bag. The screen glowed pale in the darkness, and I typed a message with fingers that didn't tremble.

It worked. He believes the Volkov lead. Will contact when I have more.

The response came almost immediately.Be careful. He's more dangerous now that he thinks Gabriel is rebuilding.

I know,I typed back.So am I.

I deleted the messages and returned the phone to its hiding place. Outside, the city hummed its eternal song, and I stood at the window watching the lights blur into constellations. Somewhere across town, Gabriel was waiting in his ruined church, planning his next move. Beside me, Nathan slept the sleep of a man who believed he was still in control.

Neither of them knew what I was becoming. Neither of them understood that the weapon they'd both helped create was learning to aim itself.

The hunt was not over. It was only beginning.

And this time, I was the one holding the leash.
