Riven, then Creed follows.
Kyzen hesitates. His eyes scan across us, and I can’t help it as mine jerks down to his chest. The sight of it hurts my heart.
He didn’t deserve that.
Neither did Riven.
He finally steps toward us.
“No more secrets,” he says, quieter, calmer now.
“Yeah,” Riven adds after a beat. “No more deciding shit for each other either.”
Creed huffs out a breath. “That’ll be a challenge.”
“Good,” I mumble. “Challenges are good for the mind.”
Riven scoffs at me. “We have Thayla. We don’t need any more challenges.”
His own words seem to take him by surprise, and a desperation crosses his gaze. Kyzen runs his hand down the back of his neck, while Creed’s body falls still.
My soul jerks painfully in my chest.
Mysenta…we’re falling apart without you.
Thayla
25
Almost time, soul.
Just a few more minutes.
My chest expands as I rub my hands down my hips, mapping out the shape of my daggers. They’ve been a constant companion, a reminder, every moment since I hit the fucking dirt in the Court.
The breath I release flows through my lips as my trembling fingers trace the handles of Creed’s swords.
Okay, my precious weapons of death.
Time to go get my men.
A small chuckle replaces my exhale as I sheath the swords in my holsters, then leave his room.
I’ve been very careful returning them to their exact positions each time I’ve borrowed them. Despite Creed’s hatred toward his parents, even he can admit that these weapons are valuable. It’s also a little poetic in my opinion that when his father handedthem over to him, his cocky ass probably never assumed his son would wield them against him.
My gaze meets Yemi’s as she finishes tightening the straps on her back that hold her own swords. I swallow the nerves that creep up my spine. I won’t voice my fears about her, Doren, Iric, and even Nero coming with us. She knows I have them. She also knows I have faith in her.
“Ready?” she asks.
“Yeah.”
“Seismet, Verlet. We’re getting ready to go,”I say as she links her arm through mine.
“I’ve changed my mind. I’m going to tell Havar to come move my restraints so I can join you,”Seismet says.
“You’re not.”I chuckle lightly.“It was too much of a risk when you did that and came to the Abandon. We won’t be doing that again.”
His very unhappy neigh vibrates my mind, and I pat Yemi’s hand, halting her steps before we pass out my front door and I get too far out of his range.
