Thayla scoffs at him, but there’s a loving smile on her face that gives away the fact she’s not really annoyed.
I subtly shift away when V waddles down the back cushion of the couch. I’m not as inconspicuous as I’d like to be, though.
“Still worried you’re going to killme if you touch me?”
I keep facing Amick.“Not as much.”
“That fear of yours should be gone by now, my boy. Since we’re in the business of pushing people’s fears today, I’ll shove a little as well. You have the best seat in the living room, and I’d like it, so if I may.”
The fucking creature digs his damn claws into my forearm and walks his way up until he’s perched on my shoulder like I’m a tree limb. He smacks me in the face when he ruffles out his feathers, then has the audacity to nuzzle himself down.
“You’re trying to tempt me.”
“No, just showing you there’s nothing to fear and it’s all in your head. You’re no longer an infant, haven’t been for many years. You have control over your powers now.”
He lets out a small hoot, not giving me the chance to say shit, and I fall statue-still.“You may proceed, Amick.”
Meddling-ass creature. We’re surrounded by them.
“Thank you. So as we know, the Messenger was created by the Valories, using the Gods Binding, which in turn gave the Messenger a touch of each of their essence. They didn’t manifest abilities because the Valories didn’t allow it. They weren’t trying to create another being like the gods, but one that would guide them.
“Those streaks of essence gave them a special kind of tie to each Beginning God. Like how we speak to Derivius, the Messenger can do that, at any moment, for any reason, to any Beginning God. It’s a clear two-way mental communication. That’s where the true fear of this being came from. The gods feared that since the being had access to speak to directly in their minds, then they had the ability to hear all their thoughts.
“The true history is, the first being to ever pass through the Gods Veil with this tie, they didn’t kill immediately. They waited to see if they also had access to their minds. Unfortunately, when that being’s power settled, it seems unlike yours, all seven powers came out at once. The results were devastating and the gods killed them immediately.
“V will have to finally confirm this for me since he’s been avoiding it, but the gods didn’t realize the power coming out like that was the result of all of their powers. They believed their powers combined created a new power altogether, and that’s what scared them. As we’ve addressed, none of them were willing to give more of their own power and force that domain. So they killed them.”
“That is correct. With that being, the gods decided to release all their power to them once they exited the Veil so they could see what would happen. That is the biggest difference between you and them, Thayla, and that is what caused the devastation.”
“Just like when the Beginning Gods were created,” Thayla whispers, staring at V, wide-eyed.
“Yes. If the Beginning Gods had released the power gradually, they would’ve realized it isn’t a new power, but pieces of theirs. They, well, some of them, still to this day don’t know or understand that.”
“And that’s why they would’ve killed me. I don’t understand how some of them don’t know if Derivius does. What others do and don’t?”
“The only other to know this truth is the God of Consequence.”
“Why don’t they say anything? Wouldn’t she be at less of a risk if they knew the truth?” I ask through gritted teeth.
I’m so over the Beginning Gods and all their fucking secrets.
As much as I care for Derivius, even this shit with him gets on my very last nerve.
Hell, V’s, Seismet’s, and Verlet’s knowledge that they don’t share pisses me off too.
“We can’t share what all we know, Creed. You know this. Unlike the Beginning Gods, we don’t keep secrets that benefit ourselves. In my case, I keep and reveal them so they fall in line to keep you all on the right path. It’s not Verlet’s or Seismet’s responsibility to do that. They aren’t supposed to sway but support. No matter what. No matter any decision you made.”
I internally roll my eyes. I do know this and am very aware of that fact. I just don’t always agree with it.
He takes a slight pause after obviously only speaking that to me, then hoots.
“No, Thayla would not be at less risk. She would then become a commodity.”
“One the gods could use however they see fit. More than the ones who are doing it now do,” she huffs, rubbing her forehead. “So what’s all this leading to?”
“In order for power to be released from the Gods Binding, even the replica, a Beginning God’s power must be given.”
“Okay, so I just push my power into it.”
