Heath cracks several eggs into a bowl and whisks them with practiced ease. “Have you made your first doctor’s appointment?”

“Not yet,” I confess, my tone sheepish.

I’m embarrassed to admit I still haven’t scheduled the ultrasound. I’ve just entered the second trimester, but I’ve only recently started noticing pregnancy symptoms, and getting my glucose levels under control has been my top priority. I couldn’t afford the co-pay for two doctors this month, especially after paying extra for multiple remote consults with Dr. Hansen to strategize against the rollercoaster highs and lows I was experiencing.

However, once I’m added to Heath’s insurance, that shouldn’t be an issue anymore. And I’d prefer to see an OB-GYN sooner rather than later to confirm that everything is okay with the baby.

“Would you like me to schedule an appointment?” Heath looks up from where he’s sprinkling cheese and bacon bits over the eggs in the pan. “I’ve been doing some research, and there’s an OB a town over with experience handling high-risk pregnancies, including patients with diabetes.”

I blink, too stunned to find words.

“I just want to help out where I can but if I’m overstepping, please tell me,” Heath rushes to add.

I shake my head. “Not at all. I’m already scatterbrained as it is and am not the most organized, so I’ll take all the help I can get.”

He nods. “Great. I’ll call their office on my way to the ranch. If there’s anything else I can do, let me know.”

As he plates the first omelet and seasons it with salt and pepper, I take the opportunity to check my app again. I’m relieved to see my blood sugar starting to come down, and I send Heath the invite to view my glucose readings while it’s open.

It has me thinking I could take advantage of his giving mood and get his assistance with an urgent problem I still have to sort out after our shotgun nuptials.

I set my phone down and face him. “There is actually something I could use your help with if you’re up for it.”

“Name it,” Heath states as he brings my breakfast over to the table.

“Thank you, this looks delicious,” I tell him.

“Welcome. Now tell me what you wanted to ask.”

I trace the edge of the plate, working up the nerve. “I have to tell Grams and Florence about the baby and that we got married. I waited because Grams would have insisted on moving back in but now that you’re here—”

“She won’t have to.” Heath finishes.

“Yeah.”

“What do you need from me?”

“I was hoping you’d come with me,” I murmur, avoiding his gaze as I poke at the omelet. “If I bring eye candy, it might soften the blow. Florence would prefer Briar or Birdie, but I’ll have to make do with what I’ve got,” I tease.

Heath rocks back on his heels, arching a brow. “Oh, so I’m eye candy now?”

Warmth rushes to my cheeks. “That’s what Grams and Florence will think. Not me…obviously.”

He smirks. “Obviously.”

“Okay, fine, so you might be easy on the eyes,” I admit.

“And?” he presses.

I huff out a breath. “AndI suppose if I have to repopulate with someone, you’ll do.”

“That’s more like it,” Heath drawls.

I bite back a smile. It’s hard to admit how relieved I am that he’s coming with me.

Here’s to hoping things go just as well with Gram and Florence as they have on our first morning as a married couple has.
